Looking under my dash today and noticed there is a key with a grey wire wrapped around it not really sure of the purpose but dont wanna take it off and car not start and a couple layers of electrical tape wrapped around it, also found a little black button( it looks like) hanging down....assuming this is something to do with the security system but not sure if it should be hanging or strapped to something. Any idea what's going on here?

    Prolly a bomb or something.

But really we don't have idea either, likely the owner before installed something either with a aftermarket security system or had something else that needed a power switch.

    Yep, probably a bomb.

But maybe only a valet key/button they didn't want removed.

leave it there, sounds like someone put a chipped key in there so they could use un chipped keys to run the car. its a by pass mod ive seen if you dont want to pay for keys with chips in them.

That's what I thought it was with the key....why couldn't I use the key that's down there for the car if it has chip?

you should be able to use it. but if the rest of the keys you have are not chipped they will no longer work.

that button could be the release button too. the one you'd push to turn the key back to off if the battery was dead, or if the shiftier wire broke. so that also me be rigged up.

Aren't the keys with chips in them like 3 bucks on eBay?

depends on the year how much. most are like 12 bucks tho. mine was. (first thing i bought for my car, it came with one set) newer maybe like 20 to 30 each. then theres if its a newer car the dealer needs to program new keys iirc.

Once I put a multimeter to mine and got the resistance value...it took me minutes to solder the proper values right onto the BCM wiring. Unplugged the column connector and ... yeah. Never have a problem.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Probably an aftermarket Remote Start bypass. Look under the dash for more non-stock wiring, and locate the remote start brain. If you don't have a remote for it, you can probably track one down.

When I bought my auto start, that is all they did. Put together a few resisters that fell in the correct range.
