I was wondering if there was a way to install a button in my car that would activate the rear back up lights while driving? For example, if some guy decided to tail me like crazy if I'm already speeding a lot (and can't get over to the other lane), I could flash it at him, the same way some people flash their brights to cars in front of them to get them to move over. Any ideas of how I would be able to install this hack/mod?

wire a switch to the lights. but this is not legal.

back in the day if you were driving around with the back up lights on you were looking for a race too. so some old timer may want to race you lol

Would I have to wire in a separate power wire? How simple would the process be?

you would wire them up like a set of fog lights. just tap into the power side of the light sockets. leave the factor wires so they still work when backing up.

But wouldn't adding a switch to the power side make it so they don't work when backing up unless the switch is activated? Sorry, I'm a newb at car electricity.

they would work when you flip the switch, when the switch is off the back up lights should work fine.

you may even want to wire a relay up as well.

    like so.

you can buy a fog light install kit for about 20 bucks. its everything in this pic plus the wiring.

Is there a relay for the existing backup lights that I could just add a switch to that area of the wiring?

Mick you are thinking about this too hard. Just tap into the factory back up light wiring and run it to a switch. Run a power to the switch and you're done. The Back up lights still work in reverse, and you can turn them on without being in reverse.

Where should I run the power wire from?

Any power from a key on device, or even always on, it doesn't matter. You could even run your own from the battery/power dist. box if you really couldn't find one.

i suck at this stuff but, this is to easy. you maybe over your head a bit.

power can come from the fuse box in the car, you use a add a fuse thing for a extra power lead.

Buy one of those led licence plate things and have it say back the **** off unless you want my rear bumper in your grill. If the other driver rear ends you it is their fault for following to close. Note this is not the safest method, but the asshole would learn to not tailgait ya.

But I understand where you are coming from, not a day goes buy that I'm passing a line of cars going down the interstate and already doing 70+ mph in a 65 when some douchbag feels the need to ride my ass.

what's so hard about tapping the brakes a couple times?

and if you're not doing 10+ over and people are tailgating you, you're in the wrong lane.

Idk how things are in Michigan, but here if you are doing more than 5 over you will get pulled over. Not that anyone obeys the speed limit anyway, its really bad here on a 2 lane road that is posted as 35 you will have people seriously doing 20-25 in one lane and someone doing 50 in the other.

I don't usually have issues here in MI on freeways. Most are posted at 70, and I do 73-75 in the right or middle lane and don't have any problems. If I do, I move all the way over to the right and let them go by.

Now in the city there are always drivers going 5-10 over the speed limit, and you will get pulled over in certain areas only doing 5 over. A road near me is posted at 35 in one section, and goes down to 30. Right where it goes down to 30, people dont like to slow down, cops are always hiding using radar on the 2nd or 3rd street down. I'm always seeing people get pulled over. Unfortunately that's my route to school so I always do like 31 or 32 in the 30 zone and get tailgated constantly since it's a one lane each way road and no passing allowed. Then what do I do? lol. See it's city roads that are the issue for me.

Well one time I was on van dyke highway (70mph) and it's a 2 lanes, and everyone was doing 80 in both lanes. So I did 80 that time. Also on I-94 there are areas that are 55 mph, and some are 70. People just do 70 the whole way through (in all lanes so I do too) but I haven't seen anyone pulled over from that. Usually the right lane is doing like 65 in the 55 zones so it's not too bad.

People seem to forget that the left lane is the PASSING lane and not the "fast" lane. Once you pass you get the f#ck back over to the right lane.

From what the op was saying it sounds like he was I the process of passing when the guy was tailgating him. People do that all the time here, you will be passing a line of slow cars and some asshole will ride your ass even if you are doing 10+ over.
