i ve always played it by ear just playing wit frequecies and most of the time a sub will have frequency ranges you should try to stay within bbut if at all possible find some one to tune it o and make sure the subs are not playing the words.

getting ur system tuned doesn't necessarily mean cutting out the vocals...basically what u do when u tune a system is making sure that your subs aren't putting out any frequencies that ur other speakers are other wise whater band is crossingis going to stick out from the rest of the music...
so say ur speakers on your rear deck and front door will put out anywhere from 20k Hz to 45 Hz you'll want to tune your subs so that nothing above 45 Hz is being played through your subs...
on another note it works the same way if tou have seperate tweeters up front u dont want the door speakers and the tweeters to put out the same frequencies
