Alright. Finally broke down and decided to put a system in my GP. I've had plenty of systems in my GPs and they all have been too loud.(kicker CVRs, kicker L5s, JLs, MTX Thunder 8000s.) Ive been just wanting something to put a little more beat behind the music. So I bought a 10 inch Kicker L7 Solo baric, and bought a ported box. I just got it installed today. I have a JVC head unit, 8 gauge Stinger power wire, 8 Gauge Stinger ground wire, and Stinger RCAs, MTX 421D Amp, 10 inch Kicker L7 Solo Baric in a ported box.

My question is, am I under powering it?

Do I need a bigger amp? If so explain what I need please.

    Thanks in advance.

I personally would go with 4ga wiring to be on the safe side of things. Looking at the specs of the sub, I would say yes you are underpowering it. Here is what the Kicker site rates your 10" sub, 1200 Watts Peak and 600 RMS. Your amp does, 1 channel(s) , 300 Watt - 2 Ohm - THD 1.0 % - 12.5V DC - 1 channel(s) , 210 Watt - 4 Ohm - 14.4V DC - 1 channel(s) , 420 Watt - 2 Ohm - 14.4V DC - 1 channel. So even at its peak it is still NOT getting the max RMS. Its almost 200RMS below its rated level.

So in sort, YES you are under powering that sub.

Damn you did your research! and thats why i love this website, nice guys like yourself! thanks for the input. so what would you prefer for a amp to use? specifications etc.

also just got done hooking up my cvr's n my car quick just to tinker around, and once i got done playing them at a decent level for about 15 minutes, when i went to un hook the speaker wires from the terminals on the box, the ground terminal was hot. any idea whats going on there?

depending on the specs of the box you might not want to feed them full power, if the box isnt tuned/built for that sub and you feed them a **** ton of power the sub will start to rip itself apart

That 401d is gonna be putting out closer to 450-500watts.
Those style of amps from mtx are still considered the best amps they made. and like a 03+ cobra are really under rated.

With the length of the car you will be running 17+ feet
Yes you need to run a 4awg wire.
8awg is really for a total max power of 300 watts.

u need 4g wire...and that L7 can handle its RMS with ease....I dunno about ur amp or what its rated at...you can always add another 10 incher to it with another amp

you can overpower your kicker and be ok... kicker can handle alot as long as there is NO distortion make sure to tune it and tune it again after it breaks...ive ran 2 1000 watt RMS amps to my 750 watt RMS CVX subs at 1 ohm for over a year...no problems

i used to have 3 l7s in a cavalier. my everyday driving with it i would run about 1k to the l7s and at comps i would run 2k to them on a burp. dude l7's love power. as long as you tune correctly they will be alright. they also like a big box. go big and low with the tune and it will be real nice for ya. go with a kicker kx1000 or or jl1000/1 and u will be real happy
