In a properly built enclosure they are as good as any other speaker in a properly built enclosure. Hell I have even used 18's. It's not the speaker size that makes it sound muddy it's the speaker quality and the enclosure.

Amplifier plays a part in it as well. Amps with very low dampening factors sound like crap. You need to have an amp with >200 at the load you are running for great SQ.

Enclosure> than speaker....... just look at Bose.

    One 15" ftw

Before I got old and decided the boom game ain't for me!

And I enjoy my trunk space nowadays

Most importantly. Have a box built for whatever sub you decide to go with that makes a huge difference. Premade = lame.

I've run 4-6-1/2" subs that people thought I had 12's.

A couple of song tests I run on a system to see how the sound quality is. AC/DC Thunderstruck, just the first 20 seconds or so. The bass drum should hit heavy and hard with a little overhang as the drum head stops oscillating. Then as the second drum hits there should be a very distinguishable double hit of the drum head. If it's muddy, or it just mushes out you are either clipping the amp or the enclosure is incorrectly sized.

The second one I seriously doubt any of you have heard is Enya, on the first album track 13 or 14 has a low 40Hz tone that plays for a long time then it drops to about 33Hz and there is a second of reverberation between the change in tone. If this isn't clear then your issue is the enclosure.

this is what i have now and it has worked very well. http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...-10CVR104.html I have it in a 1 cubic foot box and have loved it with the 500 watt rms amp I have. The dual voice coil makes it put 2 ohm to the amp.

what amp are using? Is it 1 ohm stable in stereo mode?

I've always been a fan of single 12 inch setups in ported boxes... FWIW I'd suggest the Rockford Fosgate P3 or the Kicker CVX. Great balance of SPL and SQ and won't break your budget

I am using a kicker zx400.1. The dual voice coil 4 ohm one I have only puts a load of 2 to the amp which is what the amp is stable to.

When you parallel 2 speakers the impedance is halved (2 ohms) when you connect that load to an amp bridged each side of the amp sees half of that so each side of the amp only sees 1 ohm.
