Wondering if anyone has any ideas what is causing this whining noise I am hearing? Just dropped in a K&N filter, new plugs and wires. About a week later I started hearing this noise:YouTube - LS1 whining sound
Thats not my video, but it's spot on as far as what I am hearing. Anyone know what is about to die on my car? Any help would be much appreciated. Other than that noise, the car is running like a champ. Very responsive, no funny noises when turning, everything seems just fine. I did top off my power steering fluid which looks quite nasty in color! I probably need to drain and refill! Car has 88k on it.

sounds like a pulley is screaming its head off. Take the belt off and turn the car on quick to see if the noise go's away just to make sure it is a pulley issue.

When I stick my head under the hood, it sounds like it's loudest at the water pump. But I swear the noise is internal? I will try taking the belt off though. Thank you!

Noise doesn't change whilst turning? That sounds like a power steering pump taking a dump

Thanks everyone for the input. I fixed it and I'll describe it the best I can. Please excuse my lack of proper terminology. It was the small pulley at the front most of the engine. The small one that if you stand on the passenger side loooking down in the engine compartment, it's the small one to the right, all the way up damn near to the radiator. I thought it was coming from the water pump, but it wasn't. I grabbed a 15MM(I believe that was the size) crescent wrench and noticed the bolt holding that pulley on was a bit loose. I tightened it up, started the car, but the noise was still there. So long story short, I started playing with it while the car was running. I would lossen it a turn or so, tighten it, loosen, spray WD-40 down in there, tighten it back up, but nothing. So, then I notice when loosening the bolt that at a certain point, the noise got really quiet, then went away. Of course I can't leave that bolt losse about 2 turns, but the noise would come back when I tightened it up. I grabbed a flat head screw driver and pryed out a wee bit on the flimsy little alluminum plate that's around the inside of the pulley. A tap here and there, and loosening/tightening the bolt a few times, and then I just hit the magic spot or something and it stopped 100%. So, all it seemed to me was that little alluminum cover plate was vibrating as the pulley spun.By that plate as I don't know what the hell it's called, I would describe it as this: If that pulley was a wheel on a car, that plate was the hub cap. Bolt goes through the center of it and the pulley. The noise has been 100% gone for 3 days or so now, cars running fine, belts look wonderful, and everything seems normal.

It is the idler pulley in front of the power steering pump. I actually replaced the my pump when my GXP did the same thing because it sounded like the PS pump. I have a video on youtube of my GXP making the same noise before the pulley replacement. If you want I can post the link.

Check your harmonic balance, Serpentine pulley, Crankshaft pulley etc!!!! I have a 2008 Grand Prix GXP V8 with 70,000. Just had to replace myne. Its like finding a needle in a hay stack for that part!!!! It was told to me that is a real common problem for that vehicle!!!

    Good Luck.

Please do! I may have seen it already as I have watched a few. The noise is still gone, weeks later with no further issues.
And thank you to everyone who weighed in on this and offered advice and tips. Thats what makes this site so great, the people!
