Looking around it seems like just buying a Tuner and tuning it myself may be more effective than taking it to the shop.
I know 0 about tuning/tuners etc. Im going to be running an intense stg 2 cam, 3.0 pulley, zzp intercooler 2.25" w/ FMHE, 42.5 injectors, new 2.5" cat back exhaust, cold air intake, ported and polished heads with 5 angle valve job 110# springs. Machined gen 3 LIM, Northstar TB from 99 deville, If I forgot anything its pretty minor I guess.

Im trying to find out what I need to do once I buy a DHP, are there specific programs inside the pcm? A GUI? I dont even knoa what to look for.

Also with the right tune what kind of power should I expect

Maf sensor and injectors are the biggest parts of tuning.. the rest of the mods do not change your tune at all actually.

Basically aside from some trans tweaks and a few tweaks to timing the only areas you need to worry about is finding the rigbt maf table for your maf and installing it into the file and changing your injector constant. Fine tuning is typically not needed and most people go backwards after they put a good base tune on.

With that cam I will also suggest running open loop as it will make tuning and driving it much much easier and consistent.

Badically open loop is when the car is cold. The computer runs the car in open loop just by what it knows everything should be at to run correctly.
Closed loop is when the computer starts adjusting things based on what it is told from the sensors. Like the car adjusts fuel trims based on the rear 02 sensor readings when in closed loop and uses the upstream bank in open loop

This is how I understand it anyways

Here is my .02 cents........ For years I used diablosport handheld tuners and always wanted to make the jump and get HPT or DHP. When I finally did even after reading, reading and more reading I was still in the dark until I finally meet a local guy who was cool and patient enough to walk me through the tuning process. If you don't have a "Tuning Mentor" that is willing to help you out I would stay away from getting something like DHP or HPT.

Try to find some guys/gals in your area that do there own tuning and ask them if they can show you the ropes. Good Luck Midnight :-)

There are very few things you need to know to do a 'full tune' on a car, so dont be afraid of it.

The learning is basically knowing what not to screw with.

A basic 1.0 type tune is not difficult but for cam and injectors for someone who has no experience it not an easy task. Maybe im just slow but it was a PITA and Im still learning.

its real easy. There no reason to do any fancy tuning for a cam.

Care to elaborate on how you tune for a cam? I really feel your giving GTPMidknight false hope here.

Do you just adj idle up or down??? :-) ONLY KIDDING or do you go into the plethora of tables, THAT WILL NEED ADJUSTING WITH A INTENSE stage 2 cam in order to not have some surging, hard warm starts, terrible MPG. That is alot for a newb to understand HPT in my opinion. But you know what they say about opinion :-)

Terrible gas mileage? Hard starts? Surging? Those are not symptoms of a bad tune but a symptom of a bad setup.

There are plenty of ways to make tuning short and easy work. The fact that a 3800 uses only a maf makes tuning a matter of preference and not necessity... you are not changing the anything related to the "tune" when you ad a cam... or a turbo.. or a csc or a bigger blower ...

It is funny that you say that I am wrong and you are right but you cant even give an example why that is.

Im not saying you are wrong you post in this section alot and obviously have alot of tuning expieriance. Im just trying to say that to you tuning is easy or was easy for you to learn. For me, learning to tune was/is not easy. Im simply trying to give GTPMidknight both sides. I wish I caught on and had half of the knowledge you post on here. Not everyone has a knack for tuning. Again Im just trying to give both sides.

I guess GTP Midknight checked out on us about a week ago. You still checking is on you thread? Your probably even more unsure now. Sorry for hi-jacking

I was reluctant to learn tuning as well, but it's well worth it. Really, there are so many guides out there, and such a great support base for this platform, there will be plenty of people to help you with each step.
