I did a search and couldn't find a straight answer so I figured I would make a thread. I put in a vs cam, ls6 springs, and a rm single roller about 3k ago. I did not put a chain tensioner on this set up. However I have noticed other people have been running tensioners on their single setups. So the question is do I have to run a tensioner with a single roller setup?

this is on a 02 gtp

I had a single roller on my previous setup with a tensioner. When it snapped, after the tear down, i found there were so many chunks of tensioner in the oil pan. It had been noisey for quite a while. I would say, if you are considering pulling the timing cover to put a tensioner on, just go with a double roller and never worry again.

I'm trying to avoid going double roller but it is something to consider. how long did it take to break that first chain? did it break because a tensioner isn't required with a single?

iirc it was recommended. i think it was ~20k hard miles on my 356whp xp/head setup before it started making noise.. DR is easy. take balance shaft gear off, machine oil pump cover and crank gear, done.

So it is recommended. Your setup is a lot more powerful than mine is. Know of any deals on DR setups? $200 is kinda high
and thanks for all your help man

Im surprised more people havent chimed in about this topic. Obv this is only my experience. At the very least you need to put a tensioner in there i would think.

    read this too: http://www.grandprixforums.net/threa...r-timing-chain

What's the HP break over for considering a DR TC?
    What's the strongest Single?
And was/has been ever a Gear/Drive set up made or experimented with?

See the whole reason I didn't put one on was I could not get it on. the chain was too tight, and in the description on zzp's websitte I interpreted that you do not run one on any RM set.

there is no horsepower break over for the double roller it's about reliability do you really want to bend a bunch of valves and tow your car back home to save $100
