It's not too bad in the valley, that wall behind the push rods is the worst. I hope to clean it out gradually and safely so I don't have to drop the oil pan.

you can see how black mine is, but it was also as clean as you see it. no sludge build up at all. the valve covers were pretty nasty when i did the gaskets a year ago and i cleaned them up good on the inside. when i did my lim just a few months back now the rear cover was leaking, and it was clean looking inside, and the rockers looked a bit cleaner as well.
so the moral of the story is change the oil every 3,000 miles, and it should clear up the sludge.
how she running now? or your done due to rain now?
I'm done due to rain, so hopefully finish tomorrow. Looking at the pics of the old gaskets, I think it'll make a good bit of difference, at least I hope it will.
It runs\idles\drives good but has no power when I get on it. The 3rd ECT is bad so I'm going with a different brand this time. I pulled the oil cap and could see the oil bubbling a bit, so I think there is too much throttle body cleaner in the oil. Gonna drive it (and take it VERY easy) to Walmart and buy oil for an oil change. Also, when I get on it, when I let go, it died twice.
If the oil change doesn't do anything, I'm thinking exhaust restriction...clogged cat.
make sure all your vac lines are on and not leaking, and that all the sensors are plugged back in.
for the cat drive it at night, get on it some, then stop and look to see if its glowing red.
when cold, you can bang it with your hand. if you hear it rattle inside its shot.
All vacuum lines are connected, checked that first thing. No SES light either.
Removed and checked the PCV valve, but it made no difference. This time around the block the SES came on though. Still no power under boost. When I got back I checked the oil and it is overfilled, but not too bad. Still gonna change the oil tomorrow though. If my cat is clogged, I'm just gonna have it hallowed out (small town) or have then replace the cat and U bend with just some pipe. Other than this stuff it seems to idle REALLY good and has turned over every single time right away. Once this thing is fixed, I'm a happy camper. If the cat is clogged, I must have dislogged some carbon to clog the cat while it was apart.
Now it's pretty hard to start, almost sounds like it's not getting compression. I'm hoping is just the oil...if not I might be doing a head job. Once it's running, it runs fine, other than under boost.
how many quarts did you put in it? i just drop 5 in, and its a tad bit over the full mark.
When I changed the oil last week, about 4.5 quarts, maybe a bit more. During this project I put quite a bit of throttle body cleaner in the intake runners, which eventually makes it's way back down into the oil.
so how full is the oil on the stick?
i sprayed my heads down a lot as well, i let my oil change go for 3 months, waited till it was due, that was last week i changed it. i knew i spilled no coolant, so i let it slide.
you need to re scan the car, see what the code is now. it may be a new code.
I would have scanned already but Oreilly's was closed. I'm going there first thing in the morning. It's a tad past the F in full on the dipstick, but that's right after I drove it and shut it off so it hadn't all drained back into the pan yet. I'm pricing out a head job on it just in case. I rebuilt my own heads on my Ford, so I can do these as well, other than milling and valve guides.
id lay off the heads till you know whats the code is. could be something easy.
Started right up this morning, drove it to Oreillys and pulled codes, same ****. P0303 and P0440. My gut says clogged cat still.
id think you got a evap canister problem, or purge solenoid. something in the evap is bad, thats what the code says.
the rules are fix known issues before tossing money into a thought of it may be this or that. the code tells the story, fix that up first.
That wouldn't explain the immense lack of power under WOT though. I can deal with P0440 code later, it's that damned P0303 code that is killing me right now. When I'm under WOT it feels like I'm towing a house.
its possible the p0440 is whats hurting you right now. when the cel comes on it affects the whole car. could be a gas cap, or the purge solenoid.
this code relates the gas tank, so if its got bad or no pressure
I already put a new gas cap on, so it might be that solenoid. I'll have to check it. If the solenoid isn't the problems then I need to find s smoke machine to check the lines, right?
someone posted up a diy set up using a cigarette to the vac lines.
Possible Solutions With a P0440 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try: Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the code, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back. Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses Inspect for damaged or disconnected hoses around the Evap purge solenoid Check and/or replace the sensor Check and/or replace the purge valve Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks
