Re: Which t-stat should I get?
Screw efficiency I want performance :D. But no really, when I changed to a 180* stat I didn't notice a change in fuel economy at all. No doubt the colder stat will lower gas mileage, but the change in fuel economy will be so miniscule that most people won't notice a change at all. So in my eyes a 180* stat is totally worth it, even if the gains are minimal at least it's something.

When I took the advice of a supposed tuner (no longer around) and dropped tstat and plug sizes I lost some serious mileage but my mods are listed in my sig 160 degree Tstat and AL 103 and with a GOOD tune I am getting 30mgh highway with 3 kids and related items for the kids at 70mph the lowest I get is 20mpg and thats beating on the car all the time if ur in it for good mileage DON'T MOD THE CAR :)

^^ That's it people, it's just that easy. For real though... i've seen worse...
This idiot said... "I want my car to be reliable, so what mods are reliable? I plan on drag racing it, but i want a reliable car that won't fail on me"
F-ING LOL!! Then don't mod and drag race the car stupid!!! man i attacked this poor kid to the max. Or the idiots that cry about the extra $2 per tank to run premium gas... hey morons, if you can't pony up the doe, why the **** did you buy a gtp?! ahh!!! Those people are the worst for me, i will make them think twice before they EVER start another post haha. :th_thumb-down: to them!

Who might you be talking about???

No one here.
Re: Which t-stat should I get?
Nope nobody here, this forum is actually really nice. There's a lot of respectful people that ask completely legit questions IMO. There's many others that have stupid people (like the ones i explained above lol) that i just can't stand. IMO if someone is cheap enough to cry about an extra $2 per fill up for premium, they aren't enthusiasts, they aren't "car" guys/gals, and they ARE f-ing retards. They don't belong on forums period. They need to go buy a Geo Metro (bad ass car IMO :th_wtf:) and STFU! I just :th_shakinghead1: in the disappointment when someone says that sh*t...
Re: Which t-stat should I get?
yea, this is a great forum... no f***king idiots really... evry1 is pretty chill
Re: Which t-stat should I get?
Yeah x2 with that, good diversity here. I like it. Seems like this forum is well taken care of too. Sometimes when i post i sound like a jerk off because i completely forget i was a noob too. And i feel like a complete a$$hole when i do that. Sometimes it's needed but most of the time it's definitely not. I just can't wait until i get my hands on this stock gtp i've been eying up. I'm going to prove how far you can take a 3.8 pulley. I plan on beating 50% and more improper 3.4 pulley setups. I was just going to get a 3.8 for my gtp but i wanna do try for 13.80's with a bone stock setup and my killer tuning abilities lol (good luck with that) but hey if it's easy why bother?

yea that would b pretty sick.... but you know, sometimes u need the smaller pulley when you do some mods just to keep up the boost... thats why id say i think after i put some colder plugs, a tstat, n a plog on i should be good to drop to a 3.5 with no kr hopefully, gotta scan...

ohh i don't disagree with that at all, shoot, when i did my rockers and headers i was at 6psi on a 3.4 lol. I tuned it up with 23* of timing and 12.0 afr and it was fast, so i dropped to a 3.2 and re-tuned for that, 21* 11.7 afr (as 12.0 i was getting 1-2*kr and 11.7 i'm not) and it was even faster. I even ran a 3.0 for a while with 18* of timing but the srt-4 i was walking (it was stock, FTL) on the 3.2, suddenly became a good race on the 3.0 after 60ish. I didn't have much top end but man did i have tq up to my azz. I put the 3.2 back in reloaded in the map and i was back to walking away from him to 130 every time lol. I'm going to be on the dyno soon and tuning different setups with my car so i'll be able to see the difference in numbers. hoping for 275ish off the spray and 375-400 with it lol, i dream big!
Re: Which t-stat should I get?
The whole thing with a colder t-stat is that it keeps the engine a little cooler, yes. But this also will make the PCM add fuel. Thus, your fuel economy will drop. And most of you say" So what, I want performance. And the colder t-stat makes my car run like a raped ape!" Again, I have to ask, do you realize why this is the case?
Most of the time, when someone installs a colder t-stat and they see a performance gain, it is because they had KR to start with. So the increased fuel takes away the KR and thus, their car feels faster. Which it is because it doesn't have KR taking away the timing. So now, you are running more timing than before you changed the t-stat, but also more fuel. So you have your performance back, but you are burning more fuel to compensate.
If you mod correctly, and don't have KR to start with, there is no reason for a colder t-stat. So sticking with a stock t-stat and a correctly modded car with no KR, you can run more timing with less fuel. This not only makes the car faster, but more efficient. So you can have both performance and great fuel economy.
There is a saying with old car guys: "Leaner is Meaner". Meaning the leaner a car is, the stronger and more performance it will have....of course to a point. But adding a cold t-stat is the complete reverse of this. Adding a colder t-stat adds fuel, thus decreasing the performance of a correctly modded engine. The only way a colder t-stat will make an engine run better is if it was modded incorrectly in the first place. Then the cold t-stat is just a band-aid to the actual problem, and does not fix anything.
Re: Which t-stat should I get?
If did it all over again I would of done away with the tstat. ah well.
Re: Which t-stat should I get?
like my dad one said once....who cares about fuel economy when your breaking thousands of dollars worth of parts, at the same time his drag car is sponsored by NAPA....lucky a$$.

If you tune the car for the colder T-Stat you can keep the same milage and get power gains I am running a 160 t-stat and intercooled car all year and still get good mileage
Re: Which t-stat should I get?
how do you run a 160* in IN and not freeze in the winter?

I make sure my antifreeze is 50/50 then it wont freeze :th_thumbsup-wink: it also heats the car up just fine

For a daily driver, even with your mods, a 160°F stat is overkill. You have a tuner, do it right and you will see more gains.
For the track where you are running pass after pass at WOT, I agree a colder stat is needed. But on the street in a daily driver, a colder stat is not needed and is backwards thinking.....especially when you have a tuner.
Re: Which t-stat should I get?
Ya a 180* stat with modified fan turn on points is more than sufficient.

meant you on the interior freezing, hah. your heat must not come on strong for a good while into driving.
