Well, until last night the gtp was running fine without a problem Then I get in and take off about a minute later the check engine light comes on.

I know the guy I got the car from said he had that come on just previously to me getting the car and smoked it and didnt find any leaks but around the gas cap area but it wasnt the gas cap so he ran some sealant around the opening. Didnt have any more problems.

So now that came on and I was running down to the last 1/2 gallon of gas as I pulled in the gas station started sputtering. Put some gas in and no more sputtering. Hop on the highway and hit 70mph and was runnin at 3k rpms. Wouldnt get into overdrive.

Tonight I went to the gas station again and was getting down to the last 1/2 gallon again and started sputtering goin into the gas station again. I shut off the car and get out it smelled like rotten eggs outside the car. Then I got back in and the whole car inside was full of the smell.

So I went to autozone and got a p0440 code (evaporative emission system small leak/no flow condition).
    (1)Defective or loose fuel cap
(2)EVAP canister or or hose cracked not connected
    (3)Purge or vent solenoid defective
    (4)Vacuum leak at engine

Well I got the gas cap just to try it out, its definitely not that. The guy I got the car from said pretty much everything was replaced. Said to try the fuel tank pressure sensor. But I was looking around and it seems like that would be a different code.

Any help here would be appreciated I dont wanna play the troubleshooting game of replacing a lot unnecessary parts..

Well I take it no one has any ideas on this..

I replaced the gas cap and the fuel tank pressure sensor and nothing has changed.

My thoughts on it are looking into the purge vent and solenoid in the back. If anyone knows anything about this if that could be an issue if they had one go bad what it did..

Also another thought was could the pcm control the car to not let it shift into overdrive or if that is a tranny issue only

Any thoughts on this would be helpful

Well, I should be getting pacesetter headers and cat soon. We'll see how that works out for me on that.

I did notice tho a couple people talkin about having cat problems had problems with revs getting up to the higher revs and not being able to pass a certain point. I had a friend of mine hit the throttle while I was underneath and heard a whining noise other than the supercharger. He also said he couldnt get it to pass 4k.

So, we'll see if that takes care of that problem but still wondering about the tranny not getting into od. Not sure if a clogged cat or an evap issue would be able to make the pcm control the tranny from shifting over or if thats just the tranny itself.

    Any thoughts appreciated....

If the car just cant get over 4k, smells like eggs, and seems like it struggles for rpm, it's almost certainly a clogged cat. As for the tranny, I have no idea.

Also, stop running it out of gas. Keep a few gallons in there at least.

touche to this comment.... I found my p0440 code comes up alot more now and every time it is when I fuel light comes on or right at the time the LOW comes on the DIC. I am going to change out the locking cap and put a new one on. Also this happens in HOT weather 85* and above.

Yeah, in park theres the rev limiter at 4k, whereas in neutral its 6k.

Thats what I was thinkin with the rev limiter in park, but other people always seem to have an opinion and dont listen. So ya, the headers and cat are on the way now waiting for that to come in.
But a friend of mine pulled up behind me a half hour ago and told me he seen blue smoke coming out of the exhaust and still seems like its running rich. Not really sure on that. Still thinking it has something to do with the fuel system. Wondering about that purge solenoid and vent.

Best advice is to pull the motor, tear it down to the block, and rebuild it as a turbo car to push 500hp....XD

But more than likely, the cat is clogged, causing the air/fuel ratio to go totally nuts.

Ya thats what I have been throwing around, but I went and got the fuel tank pressure sensor and erased the code. It was gone for about 2 weeks.
It came back again and went and had it plugged in and came up with the another code for the fuel tank pressure sensor. So I exchanged it for a new one. It stayed on for the next two days and went off. Then came back on for in the morning and was gone at night again.

Its just irritating. I ordered a obd2 scanner that gives live readings. I dunno if anyone has one of them if they are any good and how accurate the readings are with those. I'll probably have to find out what the ideal standard values should be for it too to compare them to what it shows.

I was figuring Im gonna have to go that route soon. I was just figuring on ordering a tuned chip but that might work out better. I am about to refurbish this old laptop I have sitting around here. Probably get a tuning program and a code reading program to throw on there. Just havent spent the time yet to find out which programs are good to get.
