stripped snout threads, no pulley on right now!!

I was swapping the pulley last night and things went from bad to worse!

I was using a ZZP puller kit and somehow the bolt threads/nut stripped at the very end, the end piece is stuck in the bolt (the smooth/threaded plug).

Right now, there is no pulley on my supercharger.

The puller bolt is somehow stripped and there's a bolt that goes inside the nose of the bolt (that eventually attaches itself to the s/c snout)... that's stuck in the puller bolt!

The s/c snout is somehow stripped.... no clue how that happened... but because that's stripped, even if I did get to another pulley puller, I can't use it.

I think there are three things I can do:

1) try a thread cleaner and see if that works (don't have one though)
2) try to re-tap the thread for the stock thread size. (don't have a tap either, and haven't used one in 10 years)
3) take s/c snout off and take to machine shop to press the pulley on (might be the only option)

If this weren't my daily driver than it'd be ok.... but now I gotta hope it'll drive ok....

Sorry for the rant, I'm just trying to think out what I'm going to do to get this thing running properly again!

What do you think I could do?!

get a tap and go to it. same thing happened to me. are you replacing with a mps?

i vote tap too. and i know its too late, but if you put a couple washers between the bolt hole on the the snout and the puller tool it will keep this from happening. Like i said i know its too late but if anyone else reads this hopefully thatll help.

I was using the washer between the pulley and bolt... still happened though (oh well)

Any idea how to keep the snout from rotating when trying to tap it?

Maybe some vice grips with a rag around the snout so you dont mar it up to bad and use that as leverage.

I was thinkin about using a spare old belt and some vice grips to hold the snout in place.

It appears that perhaps only the first thread is damaged, so I should be good there.

The puller bolt is trash though. I'm ordering the new set now.


It looks like it'll be about a weeks wait to get the pulley on, which is also about 5-600 miles of driving. If it were you, would you drive it without the pulley, or would you take a 2x4 and smack it on with a rubber mallet?

You can drive it without the belt hooked up. Wont have much power, but it will still drive.

Did the tap work for you? i did this same thing to my snout. i know i had the puller on correctly but somehow it got stripped.(this was not my first time swapping pulleys) but mine is about four or five threads that are stripped

Yes a tap will work. I bet you did not have the puller threaded in all the way.

the tap worked great!


I did wish I had an MPS after the ordeal was over.... which shouldn't have been a big deal.....


old belt+vce grips held the snout just fine during the tapping process and I drove it for about a week (over 500 miles) without a belt on the supercharger with no problems either.

Sounds like you got it, but If you ever have a have a machine shop press a pulley on be SURE they dont press on it without the shaft supported. The support should be on the center of the shaft were the coupler hooks up. If they press it on without the shaft supported it can push the shaft down in the housing or damage the bearings. All of the support needs to be on the shaft as if the snout housing was not even there.

If I were you Id get an MPS so you never have to do this again.

i totally agree. Dont let the press- on tempt you with the lower price haha i know money can be tight. ive pressed on two different pulleys on my car and one on someone elses with that damn tool and it seems like something ALWAYS goes wrong, drop the little Effin washer, strip the snout, strip one of the bolts, receive an all ready damaged tool, the list goes on.
