The little foam filter on my boost control solenoid is falling apart and not filtering anything.

Can anybody explain how the solenoid works internally? I want to make sure this is an exhaust/vent port. Is it sealed internally in such a way that dirt will not get sucked in the system?

I am wondering what purpose the filter serves.

It's used for traction control, it can cut boost if traction control is active.

So many cars have that little foam filter missing, it's basically not even needed. It just helps keep dust and dirt out there if you lived in a climate that was not so nice or took tons of dirt roads.
