O.K. good. Let's talk coolant. I'm leaning towards flushing the system out and going with "universal" so I don't mix green with any remnants of the Dextron. What say you car guys?

Flush. Flush it as many times as you can. Garden hose in the rad and run the engine for hours if you have to.

    Dexcool sucks hairy donkey balls.

    how to flush coolant:

remove the t stat, put the t stat housing back on, take the upper hose off the radiator, then push it down to the ground to a bucket or let it fly.

get your garden hose out, put it in the rad turn it on, then fire up the car, let it run till clear water pumps out the top hose.

then turn the hose off, run the car till no more water comes out the upper hose. then turn it off.

put your t stat back in, with new gasket, the upper hose back on.

now take 1 gallon of full strength green antifreeze, not the 50/50 crap. ( parts store cheap green is fine to use) dump the whole gallon in the radiator, fire up the car, fill the rad with hose water till its full. top as needed till its ready to be bled of air. it will burp and take coolant as the water in the block warms up the t stat opens up for a few seconds till cold coolant hits it and it shuts again.

now to bleed the air out, let it idle rad cap off till the fans turn on, (when the fans are on the temp is over 195 deg, the t stat is wide open) then open the bleeder screw on top the t stat housing a few turns till a steady stream of coolant comes out the hole, shut the screw, top off the rad. cap it.

use what ever coolant you want to. it really dont matter, dex has been fix to not sludge up.

You should also have the heat on full blast right to flush the heater core?

dexcool isn't horrible, but it's not my first choice. I use the universal stuff, can't remember what color it is.

edit: you wrote dextron, and that is transmission fluid, but spelled wrong.

Pressure washer is really the only way to get that reservoir clean. Lol

I have had good luck using Simple Green and a couple palms full of BB's, with tank removed add a little S.G. & BB's & fill to only about 1/4. Then get out all your aggressions & shake the sh!t out of it, turning it around, for a couple minutes. OBVIOUSLY discard BB's and rinse......E.

nope. no need the core has coolant to it full time. old cars you had a valve that shut the flow to the core. and turning the fan on didnt do jack back then either.

Headers are in!!!. Followed the how-to instructions from this site. Stripped the hex on one stud, but other than that it all went together just fine. Now just have to put everything else back together and make my mods. Mooo hooo ha ha!

I've been looking for threads on hiw to change the PCM this morning to no avail. Is it a military secret or just so easy it needs no explanation?

It's just a couple of bolts that hold the wire harness in.

its mounted inside the airfilter box. you need to open the box to get to it, then its a bolt in the middle of each plug, the bolt dont come out of the plug, so pull up on the plug as you unbolt it.

    unhook the battery first.

Everything is complete, except for the thermostat change (forgot a new gasket). I'm going to flush the cooling system when i do that anyway.
But the car runs great! Has a bit of a growl that wasn't there before, but it's a sleeper for sure. Acceleration seems improved but it's rainy so the tires spin pretty easily. The drive to work tomorrow will be more fun than usual!

Thanks everbody for the help. This site made the job much less daunting. Life is good!

3.5 but yeah. The belt ZZP sold me doesn't fit, but the stock one does. I'll get a suitable replacement this week.

I got my scanner going too (thanks Marshall). If only I knew what i was looking for! What should I be watching on torque pro?

long term fuel trims, timing advance, knock retard, then the less important things like trans temp, coolant temp, volts, o2 volts.

id drive it some what nice for a day or so to let the fuel trims learn, if you see kr right away it might go away once the pcm learns.

i used to run the stock belt on a 3.4, so your belt is still ok use.

I don't see KR as a parameter on torque pro. Is it called something else?

knock retard. you need to load gm pid's.

this guy has the directions listed in plain english really.
    http://www.grandprixforums.net/threads/79239-Bluetooth-and-Torque-Pro-app-Live-KR-monitor

load up the pids, then see if kr is listed, if not add torque scan its a free add on.

glad you got it working. when you start scanning all that stuff, if you are like me, you will see how little you know about cars. the more you learn, the more you learn how little you really know.
