Hi everyone, I'm new here. Just bought an '04 Comp G from my friend's dad and I've had the car for 2 days and drove 12 miles before the thing blew up on me. Long story short, it spun a bearing, which he claims was caused by me downshifting using the Tap Shift as if it were real paddles (SMG, Lambos, etc...). Not sure if it's bad to use it like that, that's a topic for a later date, but my motor is gonna cost $2200 to rebuild. That's even with him giving me $900 off because he owns a motor shop. I don't have the money for that, but found a cheap '97 GTP for sale decently close to me, and wanted to know if that motor will work. I know its a different transmission, supercharger, and intake, but that's where my 3800 knowledge ends. Will everything bolt up? Is the wiring the same? Or can I swap the intake and trans etc... Please help, thanks!

it will readily swap in with just transferring the oil pan and lower intake/sc onto the 97 longblock

re gasket the whole engine. all but the heads. they all leak sooner or later, a 97 is pissing oil all over likely.

dont forget the rear engine cover.

You are only swaping the long block, use everything else from your car.

you need to take the blower, tb and lim and oil pan alt bracket and alt off your cars engine, then put it all in place of the 97 engines parts, it all wires right back up.

Series II and Series III engines use the same block.
Off your old engine you will need.
    • Alt
    • Alt bracket
    • lower intake manifold
    • supercharger
    • oil pan
    • engine mount bracket
    • fuel rail
    • injectors
    • throttle body

Also do as Scott suggested and replace every gasket except the head gaskets.

I highly doubt the engine blew up in 12 miles from you downshifting that would break the trans well before it would spin a bearing. Your friend's dad is full of crap.
My bet is they knew the engine was bad and unloaded it onto some sucker(you) and now he is offering to fix it for you with a "discount".

Thanks, this swap sounds a lot easier than I thought.

Btw, I didn't mention it since it wasn't the topic of discussion but the car actually has been sitting for 4-5 years and probably hasn't been started in 2. 149k, but I spent 2 weeks doing a tune up, bunch of new stuff and all new fluids. It was his daily for the previous 5 years before that as well and he didn't have any issues. I guess we'll never know

Was it sitting in a garage? That car looks very clean to have been sitting for 4-5 years.
Either way the tap shift had nothing to do with the engine spinning a bearing.

Ended up picking up an '03 Bonneville SSEI, I'm assuming the same goes for that motor? Only need to keep the longblock? Only thing I'm unsure of now it the crank pulley

balancers are all the same, some are a bit larger some are smaller, all of em work and fit the engine. only real difference is if its got 2 belts or one.
