The loping has me wondering.

Could be a dirty TB or something else silly causing the lope type issue you mention.

As for the 171.. you say you cleaned the battery cables. Did you pull the boots off the ends (pull bolt out and the ends slide off) and take a look for corrosion going into the cables?
