Have an '04 with 216k on it. Previously I came from the world of early 90s Nissans that used bike chains as a timing chain and were only good for about 60k miles. It appears I have a similar, very subtle rattle at idle that isn't consistent. Closest thing I can compare it to is a worn out tensioner with the Nissans I used to own, but of course I could be wrong.

I've read and heard that the chains/tensioner on the GP can go forever, but was curious if they do wear out will I get a noise from it enough to be noticeable if it is very faint. I'm planning on doing a LIM job soon and figured If I already have that much of it apart to go ahead and do a chain/tensioner at the same time, but of course don't want to do extra work if I don't need to.

With the mileage I have and a newly rebuilt tranny I figured it might be a good opportunity to replace it.

likely not the chain. its not 4 foot long. lifters, pulleys, injectors all tick.

Doing the LIM gaskets are not even remotely close to doing a timing chain...but I doubt the chain is even your issue.

You'd have to drain the coolant, and remove all the accessories, belts/etc., and then the front cover...after removing the passenger side tire, brake components...and then reverse. It's a little more complicated than that...but I almost would rather pull the motor than do a front cover swap in-car.

I would almost rather replace the engine than mess with internals. Especially since you can get a good sub 100k mile motor for around $500.

Get one of those stethoscopes from Harbor Freight... Use it on the front cover to see if noise is from within... Tensioners, even balancer pulley can rattle if it's got issues. (don't ask) lol... But try and pinpoint the noise or at least narrow down possible causes before getting all crazy and shotgunning parts at it. ; )
