So i got a 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1 V6 on 9/23/11 i drove it the next day 9/24/11 and it didnt have enough coolant so the temp creeped until it reached 245 stopped turned it off. Let it sit for 30 minutes then my dad looked at it put water(plain water) in the radiator. and i set off to my house house which was like 3 miles away.i got there everything was fine. Then a week later the car overheated on me and left me at the side on the highway i waited for it to cool down. The next day my dad and I replaced the thermostat and water pump and flushed the radiator. it did the same thing a week later where it over heated almost instantly. Then i explained the problem to my auto teacher he said get a lower temp. stat and let me drill a hole in it so you wont have to bleed it. So i had the thermostat replaced with an 185 degree tstat with a hole in it. now the car runs at 145 degrees because of the hole and gets the ****tiest gas mileage about 16-17 mpg and the coolant gets low about every 3 weeks. The coolant temp stays at 145-155 when on the highway but when i stop it starts to go up slowly until i start moving again. sometimes i turn on the heater on full blast to keep the temp low so it doesnt over heat. Can anyone Help me? i think its the intake manifold that's leaking coolant. Any ideas the car runs fine and there's no white smoke or oil in the coolant or vice versa.
    any suggestions?

do you know if the fans are turning on?
if your oil doesnt look milkshakey id say its probably leaking coolant from the valve covers. check around there to see if there is coolant coming out of the side of them, and check all of your hoses for proper connections.

I'd say at the speed it's losing the coolant, you wouldn't see it burning it. 3100's are known for intake and or head gasket issues. I'd assume that if you keep the coolant full...you wouldn't overheat. Then you can fix it when you are ready or when it pops.

Repeat after me, thirty dumb hundred.

the ac fan is turning on and the main one doesnt i dont why thoght maybe when i was burping the system i spilt some coolant on the fans. and it looks like the back of the engine is wet with s bit of sludge because of the coolant seepung out maybe then it combines with the dirt.

From what i've read from a unremembered site was that the cooling fans have a two system relay. Where at high speed the fans run faster, and low speed the fans run slower or visa versa. I'm trying to figure that out with mine right now. After recently replacing the heads, rocker arm bolt threads, and lots of gaskets. Anyone got some more technical info on this situation?

What all have you done to the car? Replaced the intake gaskets with the metal ones? List what you have done to this point.

On my car i have took the car down to the block. Replaced head gaskets, LIM, UIM, valve cover gaskets, Thermostat and thermostat gasket. What temp should the fans come on for this car? i've let it go up to halfway (about 220 degrees F) and no fans came on. Also with this car it is difficult to bleed all the air out and keep it out.
