I bought this 1998 Daytona 500 133,xxx miles and decided to fix it rather than to strip it down. It will not go into park but it will go through every other gear, its stuck out of park. now the guy i bought it from only had it for a week and he bought it from his friend to flip it. They said the transmission slips when its warmed up. i drove it home, and the transmission seemed to work fine, but like they said, when it got almost to OT, it started to slip slowly, no matter how little of gas i gave it, drive just acted like neutral. i pulled over, and tried giving it gas, and drive acted like neutral. i shifted to 1st and still nothing, all the gears acted like neutral, i couldnt feel any gear engaging. i shut the car off, and waited 5 minutes. started it and away i go. then about 2 minutes down the road, it happens again. as i coasted, i shut the car down, and put it in neutral, let it coast for about 5 seconds, and started it and threw it in drive. the transmission worked again. for about 10 seconds, and it slowly gained RPM's, and acted like it was in neutral again. i did this about 10 times to get it home. Any ideas?

If its some simple sensor that's causing this, then I'm not spending $400+ and swapping the whole tranny. I'd like to know if anyone else had any issues just like this.

what color is the fluid? if its dark the clutches are just burnt up.

most likely the torque converter clutch is coming apart and this for whatever reason dumps a bunch of really fine "sediment" into the fluid which gets sucked up into the filter media and once it runs for a while, clogs the filter and you lose line pressure. Once it shuts off, the sediment settles into the pan and the trans will work briefly, until the sediment gets sucked back up into the filter. You may get lucky with just changing the filter and fluid, but probably need at least a torque converter to really fix the problem. Put the pressure control and TCC control solenoids in while you are at it. This happened to my tranny and many others. Dave at TEP can probably elaborate or vouch for this condition.

By turning it off and restarting it.. anything that is clinging to the filter falls when you turn it off. Then you start drawing that stuff back to the filter and it again can't get fluid so it won't work.

I'd consider starting off by dropping the pan. See what the fluid/filter look like and any material in the pan. Go from there.

this is not a simple sensor.
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.
