Alright I have a 97 Grand Prix Gt and 2 weeks ago my decide to stop working. my transmission will go cycle throught all the gears but it won't go anywhere like it will go to like 25mph but after it goes that fast it cuts out and stops going and then all then all the car does then is revs. Also at 15mph the rpms is at 3000 in which i thought it is not good when going that slow and the rpm is that high. I'm either thinking about selling it for parts or just get the transmission rebuild for $990 which i dont have the money for it right now so ill have to save for a which now or get a used one from a junk yard from a another grand prix. What do you guys think happened to my transmission? what should I do guys?

IMO get a new (used) transmission. except get a whole 4t65 transmission. in 97, your car came with a particularly weak transmission (the 4t60), and 98+ came with 4t65's.

4T60 wasn't a great trans, but it worked. Finding one may prove difficult as it is a 2 year only trans for that car...1996 Regal will work and 1997 Grand Prix GT are the only fitments.

Ok...after further research, it's an easy trans to find on car-part.com. They're going for about $150 with 100k.

Id agree with ctracer and as long as your gonna be pulling it id swap it out and go with the 4t65 or 4t65-hd if you can get one from a GTP it will be the 4t65-HD

Garry, the trans you currently have came in two cars only...the 1997 Grand Prix GT or the 1996 Buick Regal. It is a 4T60e. Just buy another one with a warranty and slap it in. Problem solved.

I wouldn't get another 4T60 which is what youll get out of a 96 Regal. Get one that is a 4T65 or 4T65-HD the hd will work even if your not sc

The problem with switching to the 4T65e is the harness is different and he'll need a PCM because unfortunately you can't tune a 4T65 into the 97 GT. This is the reason I say stick with the 4T60e.

the Hd has different gears, so the pcm would need to be reprogrammed

What's the difference between the 4T60 and the 4T65 and the 4T65-HD?

4T60e uses a vacuum modulator to control transmission pressure and uses a weak transmission pump. The 4T65e uses a solenoid to control transmission pressure and is completely electrically controlled.

the easy thing to do is to put back what you take out, over done.
