So I just bought an 01 gtp about a month ago that had 164xxx on her. I went through all the fluids and the tranny fluid dipstick was stuck shut. I got it out but the color was... interesting to say the least. it also whines sometimes and it doesn't sound like the supercharger. The level the past few times i checked were barely on the stick and also pretty bubbly so I added more but she's still doing the same kind of hard shifts and moving rpms. Should I change the fluid or the tranny itself??

also, I have done some research but I found nothing the same as this
    thanks for the help

So now the fluid is at the correct level and it sounds like it's whining still??

Don't rule out the power steering pump for a whine either.

But it's hard to say if the transmission is the whole problem but it was ran low for a long time it could have done some damage on the inside. A fluid change might help but it could also kill it so it's hard to say what to do. I'd maybe suck out a quart of fluid from the dipstick tube and replace it with a bottle of lucas and see what happens.

I have put more in it but I haven't had time to check it yet. The color is a bit more gray than usual.

it also shifts very oddly. sometimes the rpm in 3rd and 4th move up and down...

I've been meaning to check the power steering fluid but it's in a very weird spot.

My trans has bee whining since I got the car almost 5 years ago. I installed a TransGo shift kit 3 years ago; the car still drives as it did, and the whine is still there.

You say you have hard shifts. Is your CEL on? And codes?

I'd do a pan drop and filter / fluid change, drive it easy for 30 days then do it again.
I bet that filter is clogged and starving the pump.

this is what i believe is the problem now. at idle it sounds like it is starving and it makes a sawing type noise...

sometimes when it shifts it sits for a few second and then kicks in. this mainly happens from 1st to 2nd gear.

the only code I'm getting is P0650 which I have found means the cel is supposed to be on but someone turned it off. I was wondering if other codes would . with that if they were there or does that hide the other codes?

I'm about to check the fluid when I can. I found the steps on line because I don't have an owners manual.

The up and down rpm could be torque converter lockup isssue. Ive seen it b4 where the rpms fluctuate a few hundred rpm.

its cap is under the alt. with a cold engine, reach between the firewall and alt, follow the alt down, you'll feel the cap. yes its in a f ed up place for sure. to fill it you need a long ass funnel, or one with a rubber hose on the end to get to the tank with out making a real mess.

if its low, add a little bit at a time, as the tank fills fast and will over flow.

if I wanted to pull fluid out of the dipstick tube, how long would my hose need to be? I have a pump that can get it.

5, 6 foot works well. put the car on ramps, stick the tube down the dip stick tube till it hits the pan, then lay the tubing over the fender to the ground, so its lower then the tranny pan. then start to suck. clear tube is nice so you can see the fluid coming your way and stop sucking in time lol

I'll do that and put some Lucas in.

Today I turned and went up a hill at the same time at a light and the whine was crazy loud so does that mean it is the power steering for sure?

I have yet to check the fluid because i have been driving it everywhere

you need to figure out whats whining, tranny or p/ steering. low fluid will cause a whine in the tranny, so will a clogged up tranny filter.

I know it is the tranny because when I got the fluid level right it stopped doing some things but it sounds like the filter is clogged up.

Can I change the fluid or could it hurt the tranny?

what does your fluid look like now? is it red to pinkish? or dark? if dark it will smell burnt off the dip stick.

if you not sure what burnt fluid smells like see what another cars fluid looks and smells like to compare with.

if your fluids still red to pink, it should be ok.

when the fluids dark and burnt smelling, the trans is on its way out, its dark cause the fluid is full of clutch material and thats all thats letting it survive. 50/50 shot it lives if burnt up smelling/looking.

that looks fine, drop the pan change the filter. buy walmart tranny fluid on the cheap....its all the same. you'll need up to 8 qts. if they have a 2 gallon jug thats likely cheaper.
