Alright, back about 2-3 years ago, I was in the same boat you are. I just wanted HIDs and not to spend a lot of money on headlights. Well I spent the money on HIDs...did I like them, yes, at the time. Then a couple months down the road I bit my lip and went for a retro, and honestly I felt stupid going with the HID kit first. The saying always goes, "Go big or go home". Ya HIDs are cheap and are better than factory, but if your going to spend money, I would highly recommend you spend it wisely. And as you said money is tight. My advice to you is save up and get a retro. I honestly cant express it enough. A retrofit is the way to go. Im not saying this to get your business, Im saying it to save you from doing what I did.

Yeah I think I would end up the same way, and I would really like to go for retros but it's the time/money constraint that has me even considering HIDs. And, no offense to you, but if I do retros I would really like to do them myself because I really want to learn about stuff even if that means messing up a little.

Can still get HIDs then go retros. Just when you went to retros you would need new bulbs and possibly a relay harness.

The relay harness is a hoax. You dont need it. Basically does nothing. Supposedly "saves" your factory harness. Factory already pushes out 12 volts to a bulb, whats the difference if it pushes 12 volts to a ballast?....Nothing! If the harness is free, then fine, its worth it, other than that, i wouldnt spend a penny for one.

Goofy telescoping bulbs that are ****ing awesome *no warm up time since it only uses 1 bulb and only moves a cutoff shield*

Anyways, heres a video I took right after I got my retros finished.

    it goes

    Foglights on (5k VVME)
    Lowbeams (5k Mini H1 Morimotos)
    Highbeams (same as above)
    Lowbeams
    Off

I did not read the rest of the thread but yes they will provide sufficient lighting until you decide to retro.

So the relay isn't need then? Hmmm guess that answers my question too. So would a CanBus be needed to avoid 'bulb out' warnings?

$375 shipped for a good retro is an unheard of deal. I'd just save up, OP.

That's not real hateful given that about a buck and a quarter of that is the housings.
