A hard brake swerve to the shoulder once saved my cousin and I from getting rear ended.
Long story short, we top a hill and traffic is stopped just on the other side of the crest. My cousin stomped the brakes to get stopped and once stopped we still hear tire squealing and see a Dodge Ram sliding beside us on the shoulder with all four tires locked. Had he not went to the shoulder we would have been in bad shape.
No one was driving like a jackass, or following too close, it was just a situation made bad by placement of a stoplight.
