i tried to sell my old wheels and tires on craigslist, and a guy offered to take them for $375. He told me he was overseas so he was having his "assistant" handle the payment and pickup. I believed him at first because he seemed like a nice guy at first. He sends out the money order, then he tells me his assistant made a payment mistake, and sent me a higher amount then i paid, and he said to just take out the balance from it and just send the rest back to him. So i get the envelope in the mail, there is 2 money orders, 950 each. So i go to the bank and the lady is checking them out. She said something didnt look right, so she called in and sure enough they were bad checks. She said there have been alot of things checks this going around lately, you get an amount more then expected and they have you send the leftover money back, now i know, from now on i only sell locally for cash, and to people i trust on gpf. What a bunch of bull****. Glad she caught it, because if she would have put it through, id be out 1900 bucks because it would have to come out of my account.

It saddens me to see what this world has come to. Thieves and liars, everybody is false. I think it's time we start weeding out these selfish mother****ers and taking them down one by one, even if i have to do it myself, by my hands. It is soulless and wrong to do this to somebody, I am a hardworking honest person, and for someone to do this is utterly wrong. And i dont want to see this happen to anyone else. Greed is what this world has come to, thieves and ****ing liars, these people dont deserve the life they have, they deserve to live the life of a scumbag in prison, or worse, that will show them what happens when you try to decieve somebody, and take what they have earned in their life. f**k all of them, they are a waste, filth, one pathetic mouth to feed, a leach that is sucking the life out of this world...

There is a ton of scams on the classifieds sites. You just have to be careful and if things seem odd at all or too good to be true, don't go for it. Glad they didn't get you.

Yep anything overseas or far away from you that you dont trust don't deal with them. If they won't go through paypal and refuse to pay cash it is more than likely a scam. Had to go through a couple of these when I wanted to buy my car

Ya, those have been going on since 07. I worked in the cash advance/check cashing places for 4years. We get memos on all the check scams and the whole I will send you this amount and you send me the rest was VERY big! Good thing the lady at the bank caught it!

Had a similar experience when selling my Vette ,tried to say they'd have someone P/U the car and give me a chq. I was to cash it and give the driver the balance or some happy BS. I told the guy only cash or certified chq. for the true amount that was the last I heard from them?

Glad you didn't get taken. I bought my GTP on Craigslist recently.

Craigslist does warn against offers to ship anything when buying or selling though. Big bold letters at the top of the page. I noticed a large number of fake ads offering very late model cars for insane prices, 2006 Audi A8 for $3400? ? The ads got flagged almost as soon as they went up yet they were back in force the same day...

There is a reason that Craigslist suggests local sales only, if you can't meet them in person and take cash then don't bother. I'm surprised you fell for the overseas, assistant and check for more than the asking price. Those are all dead giveaways.

Everything about that screams scam! I've had that same line sent to me on just about everything I've tried to sell online. So many immediate red flags it's not even funny.

I decided to play the game one time and the final e-mail from the scammer said something along the lines of 'thank you, I look forward to receiving the aircraft.' WHAT!?!?! Aircraft? I was selling some car parts.

they actually send you the checks or whatever so you cash them and they get paid the amount you send back, making you 100% liable. your lucky though, at least you didnt get popped for fraud. best thing though is to stay away from money orders, checks, cashiers checks etc and stick with cash, paypal. i only mess with checks when the person is with me and doesnt mind coming with me to verify funds.
