Il law requires no tint on front passenger and windshiled, rears can be painted black.

However, if you have light tint on the fronts you just have to prve transparency with your DL, being you gotta hold it to the glass and be able to see the liscense w/ flashlight at night.

got this from 3 state cops over the weekend

i dont not agree with checking at the tint shop when you go to get it done. check with your state inspection stations, they have the correct and most up to date laws on what will pass or fail. i live in ma, and i went to get my windows tinted after i asked an inspector. the tint shop said 50% all the way around is the darkest i can go. but the inspector told me 35% so i told them to do the 35% anyways and then went a few months later to get my car inspected and it did pass. just a heads up, so check with your state inspectors.

Good info. Who else would know better than them besides the cops.

its always best to check what will pass if you know the inspectors will check what you plan on changing.

Michigan's law states that you can have the side front ones tinted if your windows remain down? Also the front windshield can't be tinted at all.

That is something you have to seriously consider before tinting your tail lights.
wouldnt matter actually, the person who rear ends the other is ALWAYS at fault no matter what. i once hit a guy back when i first got my license when i turned 16 and he no brake lights at all, he was in an old 65 mustang again no tails at all, he slams his brakes and i hit him, i was at fault according to the police report. its been my understanding that if you hit someone its always your fault no matter if a guy rear ends you and you rear end the guy in front of you because of it, the laws are all faulty , and F$#k insurance companies too they are all scandalous.

I don't understand how they couldn't break a tinted window to extract you......tinted windows are broken around here all the time, mostly to steal a stereo or a GPS. Windows with tint can be broken especially if they need to get you out.

You'll have to shop around, but you can get smoked glass. Basically what the rear windows of trucks and suv's have. Might have to get in touch with the company that makes them for production vehivles and see what they can do for you.

By the way, The Illinois law is likely to change in the near future...

IL House Bill 3325 was passed in both The House of Representatives and The Senate of the IL General Assembly and will likely be signed into law by Pat Quinn, Governor.

IL HB 3325 will allow 35% on the front windows if your rears aren't darker than 35%, 50% in front if your rears are between 35% and 30%, and no tint at all in front if your rears are darker than 30%.

I created a Facebook page to educate and alert people concerning this bill: Facebook - IL HB 3325

i just read the bill this week... and the way it read was that if you have any darker than 35% on rear windows, you can only use 50% on the fronts, but if you use 35% all around, you can do everything with it. but no tint on the front windshield, only the 4" strip at the top. doesnt seem to apply to screen materials for rear windows.

Thank you for confirming most of what I said... and generally, front windows are different from windshield... I was addressing the front windows only as provided for in the bill.

35% tint can be used on all windows except for the windsheild, where the 4 inch strip will be allowed, as long as it is used on all of the windows and none of them are darker than 35% in the rear.

50% tint will be allowed on your front windows (door windows, sidewings, etc.) as long as your tint in the rear is not darker than 30%.

Any darker than 30% on your rear windows makes any tint on your front windows (windows adjacent to sides of driver... sidewings, etc.) ILLEGAL.

The law will apply to windows screening as well, because it states "Window treatment" in the bill. You will be able to have anything on the rear windows as long as the vehicle is equipped with a side mirror on each side

I have been following this bill for at least two months now... Now only if it would get sent to Quinn and he signs it right away...

as i was an inspector for 4 years in TX, i can tell you, you can paint the rear window, and rear pass windows black, and no darker than 35% on the front drivers/pass windows, and no tint below the AS1 line on the windshield
