A 2.5 Impreza. Cheap, no tranny issues like the STI or WRX.
Good on gas, AWD decent car all around.

I'm thinking a rally car may be the way to go. Quick and small. She has a Mustang, so as much as a Volvo or Accord or Camry would be great, she'd feel too much like a mom. With the Mustang, she can fake it when she's alone.I think she'd get a kick out of WRX or a Lancer. I thought about getting a Protege5 before I got my Impala last year, to replace a yellow Ford Escape. The fact that the Protege5 also comes in yellow was a bonus. Might even convince my wife to get a yellow car. It sure isn't hard to find in the parking lot!
With the wrx line their trannies are their weakest link, they tend to flex completly mashing all the gearing together. Ive seen it before in a couple of 02's, It was like the shifter was welded into 2nd gear.
One car that I've test drove and really fell in love with are SUBARU LEGACY'S.
They have a GT manual that down right scoots!!! AWD, options...not a bad ride imo.
then maybe look into them if you havent, but i know for a fact once you start modding them the transmissions start going bad. i dont know how the transmissions holds on a stock one, but my girlfriends brother inlaw has one and i think he said he is on his 6'th one. the newest was a well built one. i think the others were just other stock sti ones. and also his is very modded. think he said it ran high 11's. so a stock wrx might do fine.
My buddy has a 2002 I think WRX not an STI and has no problems with the tranny. He just burnt up one clutch and that was it. He also drives it pretty hard.
since we are on the subject of Subaru, how about a Legacy GT?? i love those in purple or pear white!! with the dual exhaust and the spoiler!! the are so HOTT!!
anyway keep us posted, let us know what you decide on!
subaru trannies will last as long as you dont redline clutch drop and bang gears to hard. remember thats a lot of rubber grabbing the pavement and the trannie takes most of the abuse from that.
