So how many of you are still using Dex coolant? Why?
I'm using the aftermarket dex cool
im using prestone yellow with whatever amountf of dex i wasnt missing after my fixing the leaking lim gaskets..
I am, becuase there is no reason to switch.
I am, but the question I want to know is if mine is still the stock Dex cool.![]()
I quit using it a long time ago after I dug a beach out of my radiator from all its deposits.
Here is more reason Dex-Cool will never ever ever ever see use in any care I own.
Where did this come from you may be asking?
Well I decided it was such a nice day out and I got home a little early from work and had nothing else going on so I went out to pull the heads off my engine so I could get them ready to be cleaned up and work some magic on them.
I pulled the front side head (the 1-3-5) and was inspecting things over, looking at the heads and then looking at the pistons then the coolant passages. I noticed some grit around the #5 cylinder. So I got my trusty Craftsman seal pic and was just digging around to see if it was solidified or what. I dig a little, I dig a little more and I keep digging and find that there is a LOT more in there than I though. So I started digging out what I could. What you see in the pictures above isnt all of it. There is at least that much more left in there that I didnt have the patience to keep digging out.
Say what you will, make whatever argument you want for or against Dex-Cool but there is one very simple fact. Never EVER have I seen a green coolant do this or any of the non-long life coolants do this. The Grand Prix was the first vehicle I have ever owned that had Dex-Cool in it and I guarantee you if I ever get another that has that crap in it, it will be drained as soon as I drive the car home and the engine has cooled down.
Oh, heres another thing. I had the coolant system flushed, professionally, TWICE when I had cooling issues related to my radiator being buried in this same crap. I also have a coolant filter on my car and STILL this stuff was in there. Does that tell you anything about how badly this stuff settles where it may and entrenches itself in your cooling system and your engine?
DEX COOL is the worst, within 5 days of owning my GTP I had it flushed and refilled with the prestone(yellow) extended life...

if your still in question about dex cool, then ask your local dealer if any of the new cars come with dex cool in them....they don't, it's not been in any new cars since 04....
I highly recomend flushing that garbage out, and then doing so again every 500 miles or so until the brown sludgy garbage is no longer visible... for a good antifreeze try the prestone ext. life, it's yellowish and mixes with anything, so far I've heard of no problems with it...
good luck

the more flushes the better, i'll be doing mine again next week, it's third so far and i still keep getting the residue on the cap... I do remember seeing a post on this site a while back for a coolent filter that connects just before the thermostat on the top rad hose... I think Scotty may have one already, ask him about it as it may save on many flushes....I should get one as well...
let me know what you come up with....
