This just happened yesterday, it is very sad. I am guilty of driving the Grand prix in flip-flops, which is no big deal being an automatic, but I'm also guilty of driving in flip-flops in the Saab which is a Manual.

My Prayers go out to the Families of both the victims and Driver. 3 Lifes cut short and another that is about to spend the rest of its days in Jail more then likely (They are talking about Manslaughter charges against the drivier). Expect to see a new law come to light about driving in Flip-Flops, it may or may not pass but I'm sure it will be brought to light.

Three killed in new case of Toyota flip-flop-related acceleration

Three elderly women were killed this morning in Albany, New York, when a 55-year-old woman driving a Toyota Highlander drove into a group of people standing on the sidewalk. Unintended acceleration? Not so much. Her flip-flop was caught under the gas pedal. Another sad case illustrating the real cause of unintended acceleration — beige cars being driven by people of an advanced age.

The accident happened around 8:30 a.m. when 55-year-old Luanne Burgess lost control of her Toyota SUV off Route 85A, driving into a group of adults that were part of a walking group. Three members of the walking group were killed and declared dead on the scene.

Police say Burgess had just dropped her 6-year-old foster child off at daycare and her foot or flip-flop she was wearing became stuck on the gas pedal, accelerating the car.

    The driver's injuries aren't life-threatening.

Acting Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple called this accident "one of the most horrific accident scenes he has ever seen."
On a lighter note, the Irony is that it was a Toyota.

Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war.

There are accidents and there are times we can't control things. I commonly feel that if people read the damn owners manual stuff like this could be lessened.

Turn off key and press brakes. Very few stock vehicles can overpower their brakes when pushed with a good dose of adrenaline.

We can't ban the universe and every piece of clothing.

Put it in neutral first to get the load off the transmission, then apply brake. Some people can't manage without their advancements of power steering and brakes.

I wear flip flops everyday.. I just take the right one off to drive. How did the acceleration cause her to swerve? Or were the runners on the road. I don't think flip flops are to blame in this situation

No need to take the load off. If it's life or death.. turn the key off. That is going to help. Pressing the brakes would help as well.

One of the largest issues in the world is that people don't know how to react in an emergency. In earlier times, they would have died. Medicine though has progressed to give them many chances to kill themselves and others.

    Common sense isn't very common.

From what I was told Oklahoma is like that, not allowed to drive barefoot or in flip-flops.

I agree with Bill on this, It could have been avoided with a simple deep breath, and a rational thought of how to stop the vehicle... but that doesn't tend to happen in a OMG PANIC!!! situation.

I almost had a OMG PANIC!!! situation, but a deep breath and a rational thought saved our work car. I was out on a parts run in a Monte Carlo SS, decided to play a little because it was like my car but not mine (I know, I know... bad me) I floored it at like 15mph in a 45 and got to 40 and pulled the throttle back and realized that (because some idiot flipped the floor mat over) the pedal was stuck on the floor. Given that was continuing a fast acceleration and well over speed limit, I noticed I was gaining fast on a truck going slow and both lanes of traffic was occupied so I couldn't pass. Needed to react quickly, took a breath and - O no, turn signal and brakes. (This is the moment where Joe Doe Citizen would have let go of the wheel, grabbed his cheeks, and screamed like Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone, all the way to the scene of the crash) But calmly and quickly I kicked the car into neutral and applied the brakes. The old man freaked out a little as the supercharger was screaming and the engine was bouncing off the rev limiter, but no body or vehicle was hurt.

It is indeed sad, and my heart goes to the families of the victims and the woman behind the wheel that has to live with this guilt.

was there something wrong with her left leg and foot, like you cant use it to hit the brakes?

being a left foot brake'er , this would never happen to me.

left foot braking is a carry over from truck driving, if you want to downshift with out the clutch, you need your right foot to goose the gas, and while using the left foot to brake. i never touch the clutch unless its going in 1 st or reverse.

If I'm cruising I use my right foot. If I'm in a congested area I use both left and right.

There is already an unwritten rule: Men do not wear flip flops! EVER! No one wants to see man feet out in public. Cover those bastards up!

But in all fairness, I think I found the REAL cause to this accident...

I agree with this guy and was thinking it all along.

If you are at the beach, just take your shoes off. No need to wear gay flippy floppies.

Yankees make me laugh every year. Not all of the beach is actually sand, and concrete gets hot. But yeah, forego the flops.

Yes turn the key off. With the key off the "load" is greater because now the wheels have to turn the motor... Not the other way around. Kinda like downshifting to slow down on ice or in snow.
