i'm 19, got my license 3 days after i turned 16, and had my first car given to me. it was nothing special, 93 s-10, and it was given to me by an uncle who didn't need it anymore. i didn't have a job, and my parents paid my insurance. i worked over the summer and lived off the money from that forever. i was planning on doing that again next summer but my parents told me if i didn't have a job by the end of the month i was losing my phone and truck. i got a job, and thanked them for it later. i also graduated 5th in the class and earned a full tuition scholarship to a couple different colleges. i dropped out for now, but thats a story for the rant section. i now can almost afford to move out on my own, make a truck payment, insurance, and cell phone, not to mention food, gas, and anything else.

moral of the story: be sure to help, because it would be tough to do without a car. but don't let them take advantage of it

    Who is the parent?

I've been there, myself. My daughter asked me if she could have my truck when she turned 16. Here's a detailed account of what I told her.

    "NO"

my mom bought the gt for me,she also got a "great deal", which she wont tell me how much. she pays for insurance, but now she expects me to do lots more work around the house, which i am fine with.

Im 18 now. GTP was givin to me free but it had been crapped on by the previous owner(my cousin). parents bought it for a grand. I thought it was a great first car. auto so its easily to learn in. its a tank so it's pretty safe. comfy and spacious(good for friends). FWD good for stability.

and like above^^^ i've seen kids at school even speeding on motor scooters that can only get up to 50mph. so kids are gonna speed. just depends on how well trained they are.

My vote, give the GTP to her and go get yourself a somethin little more modern. She'll be happy, you'll be happy

I was givin my first car to me and it was a 99 Oldsmobile Alero. Yes, it wasn't the coolest car to drive, but I sure learned how to drive by having that car. I then sold it and bought my GP lol.

A lot of kids today don't appreciate anything and always expect more, even though they may already have it made, which really frustrates me. I was brought up to appreciate what you have and take pride in everything you do.

If your daughter is a good kid, has good grades and stays out of trouble then get her a car. I wouldn't give her your GTP, but go buy her a car for maybe 1-2 grand. Not only will she get a car for free, but she will also learn how to appreciate the car and realize that having a car is not only a privilege but money doesn't grow on trees either.

I was spoiled, first car was an old 79 mustang, bought for me at 15 for a grand. old but I miss it, still didnt really car about it. 17 I recieved my 95 Mitsu*****y pickup, free from grandparent.... ran it to the ground, but i learned to drive a 5spd with it. Tried to buy my first car myself at 19 in college, couldn't afford it and it fubar'd my credit... now at 25 my GTP is almost mine... all bills mine, and I'm happier for it.

I think had I bought my own at 16 I'd be a better person STILL for it. Not that Im a spoiled brat but I wasted a good 7-8 yrs before I learned to appreciate anything. Make her get her own, or at least get a job to help buy it.
It not, get her a $1000 beater and tell her if she wants something better, work for it

My first car was a 78 cadilac deville sedan, use 2 bumpertag all my buddies at school with it But it was a huge piece of $h1t, which made getting a job and finding a better car a big priority. So when i finaly had enogh 2 get the gp, it was a great day.It made me appriciate it more because i had 2 work 2 get it.So buy her an uglie but dependable beater and she will want to work for a new one.

Don't act like you know how I was raised, don't don't know $hit lady. My parents may have bought me stuff, but it def wasn't what I want when I wanted it. My family is no where near rich, no way they could give me everything I wanted. Sorry my parents tried to make their kid happy and yours didn't.

Yep and that's why I didn't want to, I knew this would happen. I'm fine with ppl hating on me but don't bring my parents into it.

My parents bought my first car, paid my gas and insurance while in high school so I could have a car and still play sports and focus on my grades. I ended up getting a job about a year after I started driving because I wanted money to blow and started paying for most of my own car stuff. Really wish I didn't get a job. It took away a ton of time that was the last of my child hood. Instead of being an all league football player like I should have been I worked, missed practices and workouts. Instead of graduating in the top 5 in my class I dropped to 20th, barely made top 5%. I am working and in college now. My parents made my life very easy for me for the first 18 years of my life which most would say makes ppl not learn how life is. I believe its how your parents raise and give their children things, not a matter if they make them go out and do it theirself. Up to 18 is the part of life you should enjoy stress free, don't take that away.
I 100% agree with you...My first car was actually a handed down vehicle and my mom paid everything and just told me to put gas in it and she would contuniue to pay my ins and things like that as long as i was doing well in school. So im VERY GRATEFUL for my parents. And yes while kids do need to work for things, i do believe that some stuff can be made an exception.

IMO If she wants the GP, and she is a good kid, You should give it to her and see about buying you another DD/Winter Beater. Or the other way around...Buy her another GP and keep yours.

I think you guys are being a tad harsh...i mean we dont know how his daughter is (and actually studies show that men drive a helluva lot faster than women, teenage as well as adult) and on top of that like a few other ppl said you can speed in anything with wheels and a motor.

WHOA! thats kinda outta line. i never said anything about your parents or how they raised you.. thats actually like a proverb actually. and calling me lady? holy crap im not even old enough to go to the bar, not the old lady next door with all the cats. and my parents didnt want to make me happy? try switching that to parent that has 2 other children to raise and support and dealing with a deadbeat husband. get off your soap box. poor baby you got a job for spending money and messed everything up. its not my fault you couldnt keep you priorites straight.

    to the op:
start off by slowly letting her borrow the car, but dont "give" it to her right away. learn to trust her and see how she does.

im 16. my mom bought me this gp. therefore it was free. your going to try and tell me i dont give a sh1t? and not everyone was raised the same. my mom pays for insurance and repairs. but when something goes wrong , i dont just say "mom my car is broken, get it fixed" i try and fix it myself to save her money. she doesnt know much, when something goes wrong she usually brings it to a shop and has them do it. i will try and find the parts first to save money, and so forth.

like i said, my truck was given to me at 16. i kinda sorta appreciated it, but i always wanted to sell it for something else. my parents cut me a deal on the grand prix, but lets be fair, 1800 cash as a high school student wasn't easy to get. and i love it, because i worked my ass off for it. and now i have a loan out on an s-10 with a 350 and could only be happier if i didn't buy it in winter and could drive it. i love that one too, and i'm extremely proud to have both of them. it just means more when you earn it imo.
