You're buying a sportbike to commute? Also a bad choice. I ride 110 miles round trip to and from work and my R6 is so uncomfortable that I'm considering selling it to get something like a SV. These bikes are meant to be fast, not comfortable and they are horrible to commute on.

Seriously, if you want a liter bike that's comfortable, look into a SV1000 or a FZ1.

    How much do you weigh?

A 600 and a 1000 are no different in the fact that you can kill yourself either way, you can be a brand spanking new rider with 0 experience, and still hop on a 1k and be fine, it's more on how YOU are then the bike.

I myself started on a 250, then a 600, now on a 1k.. everyone's different. I only started on a 250 because It was 4500 brand new with 0 miles, and got 70MPG, but it did get boring after a while.

I jumped on a 600, which was tons of fun, then decided to go to my 1k, because I just overall loved the bike and always wanted one, and wanted something with a bit more power.

If somethings wrong with a bike, you will know right off the bat,

I would never buy another bike brand new, it's a waste of money, you can have the same bike for half the price, with under 10k miles, which on a bike is nothing wrong at all... but to each their own..

All bike manufactures are fine, everyone has personal preference, I like kawi's and Honda's myself.

What does you're "Z" run in the 1/4?

There is absolutely no advantage for a new rider to get a 1000 over a 600. 99.9% of us wont ride a 600 to 75% of what it's capable of doing, let alone a 1000.

I started out a 500 twin with 40HP and then moved on to my R6 with 120HP and I don't regret learning how to ride a streetbike on a smaller bike for even a second. A new rider and a liter bike is a deadly mix.

OP: Find a bike that fits you. Sit on R6's, CBR 600RR's, GSXR's and ZX-6R's. I love my 06 R6 but it's a little too tall for me and It was really uncomfortable to ride until I got used to it. I think the new 600RR's are the most comfortable 600's out there right now (If we're talking strictly 600's, 650 twins are great too though).
Then the people buying the bikes must be complete morons, 1k's are no more dangerous then a 600.

You people are acting like he's going to go pro racing with this bike, He's not.

A 1k is TONS more fun in the long run, way better on power, it's all about responsibility... the bikes not going to wrap the throttle by itself.

No the bike will not wrap the throttle itself, but when a new rider gets on and makes a mistake on a liter bike, it is magnified many times over.
Kawaford, honestly, you are an idiot for recommending a liter bike to a new rider.

And you're an idiot for not knowing what you're talking about.

You're entitled to your opinion like I am mine, if you don't like it, keep it to yourself, other then call me out.

I've seen plenty of people from 0 experience to little experience start on 1k's with NO problems. Because you couldn't handle it doesn't mean everyone else can't.

How do I not know what I am talking about? Find a forum with EXPERIENCED riders and see what they have to say. Most of them would say to start with a 500 or smaller.

To a new rider a 1K is certainly more dangerous. They have a lot more power and it can get away from you a lot easier.

And if he's not going pro racing with his bike, why's he need a liter bike?

thank you, well said these dealership strive on new riders knowing they would be back for the 1k. half of the people commenting on this post probably dont even ride or nevr owned a newer generation bike. get a used bike if youre looking for a daily commutter.

to be honest, even if you know how to ride fairly well, if youre looking for a commuter bike you should get something smaller cc anyway because they dont use as much gas. my girlfriends ninja 250 will get upwards of like 60 mpg where i have to putt around on mine like an old man to get 35 mpg.

i also think for your first bike that youre gonna be riding more ritually that you get something that is:

    a) comfortable
    b) gets good mpg
    c) something cheap(er) that you can do a little damage to without worrying about it

Since opinions are like a$$holes, here's mine.

IF I were to ever get a bike, it would be a cruiser. I wanna sit back, and enjoy the ride. I've got a bony ass, and I need a little cushion so it won't hurt. While I'd love to have one, I enjoy my car for now. Maybe later on I'll get something with a wide seat.

I have a Kawasaki Vulcan Classic 1500 which is a cruiser. That bike is a blast to ride. Just sit back and cruise. Don't have to worry about your back or wrists getting sore like on a sport bike.

Edit- Here is a stat that shows that taking a rider course is a good idea.
    22. T he motorcycle riders involved in accidents are essentially without training; 92% were self-taught or learned from family or friends. Motorcycle rider training experience reduces accident involvement and is related to reduced injuries in the event of accidents

Most insurance companies encourage riding courses, which is what I would do. Some will also be license courses once you pass, and you won't have to go take a test.

I think I get a 10% discount for 2 years for taking the course. I think I save like $12 a year but it was nice not having to take the test and I learned quite a bit at it.

At 190 and 6'1 you're going to feel like a GIANT on a 600... and it will be super uncomfortable.

I'm way under your weight, at 6'0 and a 600 felt like a toy, and sucked after 20 minutes of riding, unless you get a sport-cruiser, and not a super sport.

In the end, it's all up to you bro.

ZX14 will be my next bike, I've been searching, but they still are 7k+ used.

thanks for all the replies... and e arguments lol.. bio ur bike does look comfy. i sat on the r6 and r1 and the only real difference i felt is it sits a tad higher and weighs a lil bit more.. im going to keep my options open for now. i still have 4 months til its gonna happen. the dealership said the r6 will get roughly 55 mpg ridden conservatively. im just tired of spending 100+ dollars a week on gas. i know theyre a lil older but how are the honda vfr's?
