About 4mpg less.
Alright I can live with 20 mpg lol about $25 more per month. Technically getting a new transmission has a 5 year pay back. Maybe never fix it? Just bought a 06 silverado. This is my commuter anyways.
Well if you diy it wont cost you much you just gotta know how to work on stuff.
Yeah Ive rebuilt A few 5 speeds with great success. Taking it out isnt a problem, just rebuilding one makes me a bit nervous. It the only thing I haven't ever fixed myself.
Dont be. Just pick up an atsg manual and youre good to go. You cant mess it up.
My friend ran his gtp w/o 4th for 2 years, even on long trips.
never had a problem.
If I ever loose 4th, I'm going to continue driving, until it's completely inoperable.
Thx for your help guys! Think I will at LEAST get it through winter so my truck doesn't see salt (owe on that one). I think I might tackle this rebuild eventually.
I had a 95 Monte Carlo with a 3.1 and 4th went out. On the hiway the RAMPS would be around 2k, and when it stopped going into 4th, it would run around 3-4k RPM. I dont have exact fuel numbers, but a 120km run doing 120km/h would use about 1/6 a tank, and after 4th went out, the same run would use like 1/3 a tank :\
Other than 4th the car shifts perfect. Its got 168k miles. How long do these trannys last? Should I rebuild ($1300) for a $2000 car? Worth it?![]()
