Nope,
I have 170,000 on my car. Bought it in 2002 and started modding it since day one, I haven't had a major failure at all, that includes my tranny. My stock tranny works and its in my shed with 150,000 miles on it. I only replaced it because I wanted a stonger, geared, stalled tranny I can take to the track on slicks. My motor is the original long block, still hold 50-55 psi oil pressure at idle too. I can drive the car anywhere and everywhere without worrying about it.
My secret? Maintence. I use conventional oil, change it every 2,500-3,000 miles. I don't run synthetic and run my oil 10,000- 15,000 miles like I hear some people do, thats crazy IMO. I drop my tranny pan every 20k like clock work. A little maintence goes a long ways, along with the CORRECT size pulley and a preoper tune with the owner always scanning. I think alot of the failures can be prevented if the key things I stated were done and always done. Also people getting used GTPs, previous maintence matters alot too. From what I can tell, my car was taken care of the first 55,000 miles of its life before me.
I by far don't baby my car, i'm not a complete asshole either. Back in 2002-2005 my car was street raced nearly ever Friday and Saturday. Couldn't tell ya how many passes I have on it, hundreds probably. I grew up and got out of that scene, its not for me anymore. The Track is the only place to go. It lives an easier life now, though I plan on bolting on some slicks soon and seeing what she'll do...
My black GTP has about 147,000 miles on it, it hasn't had any major issues either and its been raced a bit too. My wife used to race it in the 1/4 alot when we were dating. Its on the original motor and tranny and its on the same schedule as my GTP...
