Excessive piston slap occurs when the clearance between the piston and the cylinder bore is too great. The piston to cylinder bore clearance becomes too great either through wear, mismatched pistons and cylinder bores at manufacturing or, a combination of both. The audible noise associated with excessive piston slap is due to the perpendicular impact of the piston against the wall of the cylinder bore. Audible piston slap is typically loudest when the engine is first started up. The pistons then expand with heat reducing the piston to cylinder bore clearance thus, reducing the perpendicular impact of the piston against the cylinder wall and its resulting noise.

grab a valve cover, i bet you feel it up top more. the engine is metal, a knock can and will travel sound wise. or get a wood dowel or large screw driver to your ear.

it could be piston slap then, but thats would be in the cylinder, as well as a lifter, its dead center of the engine.

sea foam it, see what happens, it cant hurt. dont put it in the oil tho, just the gas tank and in the vac line.

My oil pickup tube broke where the plate bolts to the block, but was still hanging on by a thread. It would knock like Crazy when I first cranked it for a couple minutes, then would slowly go away.
I found it when I pulled my pan off to check the crank and rods.

Is it me or are you looking for a reason for it to be rod knock?

You really should be happy..I think it's a lifter as well. Change your oil don't be so quick to assume that it's the bottom end. Check the lifters!!! We're trying to save you a bunch of money lol.
Squirrels are my engine. I need a Ford Regal

Haha I don't want it to be rod knock. I just think that's what it is. I'll obviously check the lifters to make sure first. And already did and oil change

im gonna say it doesnt sound like a rod knock to me, my engine sounded much worse when it let go. get it on some jack stands and check the flex plate, id bet its either damaged a tooth because of wear, or its shaking around while running. if not, pull out a long screw driver and narrow down where its coming from, its really hard to tell with out a listening device, ive seen a bad flex plate that we swore was a supercharger coupler before just because how hard it is to pin point the origin of sound

Well I'm basically gonna but a new motor that has 90k on it. Series 2. And just build that a little bit. Keep driving the car until motor goes out or what ever that noise is breaks and swap out motors. Also if the guy still has them I'm buying pre gens on Friday. Going to spray them gun metal, black, or silver

Cam the motor while it's out. You won't regret it.

Gen V are a waste of money to me, you'll end up spending way more than that 250 bucks just to swap a blower.

Port the gen 3 and drop another pulley size. 50 bucks > 400 bucks for the same horsepower.

gen v whine louder though and are more efficient. I'd do the swap if you have the money to spend.
