Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
Oh I plan to overly tune it, lol. I'll be tuning the entire way to AZ next year, anytime I take a trip to Springfield, etc. Naturally I'll have a better understanding of what I am doing, and somewhere along the way to understanding what I am doing I might learn that "overly tuning" is a bad idea.
Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
like stated, small changes go over best. they dont need a lot, just small adjustments.
Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
Really I don't see what I changed that caused the problem, but that's why I'm starting over. I changed the TCC release for 3rd by 4 MPH on 4 cells, then raised the idle by 5%. Now I was piddling around with tiny tuner while DHP was open, so I don't know if DHP picked up something from the clipboard and did something there. Either way I thought a full write would do it, but apparently not. A CASE learn apparently did something, but who knows.
Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
Finally got around to more tuning. I'm going by Jerry's notebook, which has me tune the VE tables...which sucked. They're done now and I've moved onto MAF tuning. I got a little over 30 min of logging in before making changes. Highest KR was 4*, at 60% TP and 2043 RPM. I'm thinking the TCC still isn't releasing quick enough so I might have to make it release at a little higher RPM. I'm leaving it alone until I get the MAF tables in line. After that if there isn't any KR I'll bump timing a bit and go from there. I doubt this KR will go away, so I'll probably end up messing with the TCC or PE settings.
Anyone have any good info on tuning PE? That'd be pretty helpful. I did snap a quick pic when we pulled over to let the log compile:

This and Dan's car are my favorite 4 door 97-03s in existence. Keep up the good work, love watching this build
Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
Thanks man. She's come a long way, that's for sure. I have some pretty cool plans for this coming year though...
Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
You don't tune with PE tables, those are set and forget really.
All you are doing is telling the computer what to do when you hit a certain threshold. Be it coolant temps, throttle percentage or MAP kpa etc etc.
On these cars it's basically just throttle %, and it'll go with whatever you have set in the tables. So if you have it at 11.4 AFR, it will try to target that and that only unless you have adder tables adding or subtracting from the final AFR command. The computer then adjusts everything else based on how much air is coming past the MAF for timing calculations and fuel. It can over fuel if the MAF sensor is calibrated wrong and even though the AFR is set for 11.4, it can be alot richer or leaner.
Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
So it sounds like I need to toy with TCC settings and see what that changes. Thanks man.
Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
Well I did some more tuning and ran into more problems like before. After a lot of frustration, chats, help from Scotty, Jeff, James, and a few others. I found the problem. My MAF is getting wet from my FWI. These problems only happen when it's raining out, and I found something interesting on a scan...take a look...
http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/...pscphgknly.png
So I either have a bad MAF, bad MAF wiring, or it's getting wet. I'm moving the filter up onto the end of the PVC so it's higher and away from the "mail slot" in the fender well. I'll have more pics on that later. I also have spare MAF I'm probably going to toss in there, and I'll ohm out all the wiring between the MAF and the PCM. Once it stops pouring rain...
Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
Well I went ahead and change the intake around, and what a difference! There was a lot of water in the intake though...I'll let the pics speak for themselves:
Old:

Once I pulled the filter off you can see water in the PVC and in the filter:

Now:

http://i1159.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3zmw9ku6.jpg
Pulls much harder, SC is a little louder, and no more problems at all! Now, back to tuning. Oh wait, the roads are freezing over now that we've had 9 inches of rain in 2 days.
Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
wow, that was wet.
i got some of that my way now. its sleeting out now.
Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
Yea, I ran an errand a few minutes ago and it start snowing, but had stopped by the time I got home. At least the car is fixed enough to run right lol.
RPM still drops from 1k to 500 or so when I'm coasting above 25 MPH, but at least I can get into boost now, lol.
Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
Yeah that anomaly on the spreadsheet was an eye opener, eh? Weird. Glad it's you, all the numbers hurt my head lol. I still think you're gonna get plenty of water on it in the revised position but its a helluva lot better. Put a roof over it?
I know we were getting the same rainfall here over the last couple days. If it freezes over now that will be a mess. Sucks to not have dry pavement during a big work break, especially with tuner in hand. That's how it usually goes!
Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
Agreed, I get to sit inside and watch my time off go by lol. It's pretty well covered everywhere now. I looked in through the wheel and I can't see the filter at all where as before I could, and a lot of the fender run off was hitting the filter before. The headlight deflected some of it, but a lot of that run off was still just soaking the filter. I made sure to hit some puddles on my test drive and she never missed a beat. At least if I have a similar problem again I know where to look, lol.
Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
If it's not one thing it's another. I got one good day of tuning in, then drove for about 30 miles to learn the trims again, and went for another log the next day. 5* of KR and sounds like a bad pulley somewhere. Ends up being my compressor pulley bearing LOCKED up. I have it pulled and I can't turn it by hand. Anyways. It's uncharted territory for me, never replaced a clutch before. I take my time getting the old one off and what not, and pick up a re-manufactured clutch for $50, only $30 more than the bearing, so why not?
I no sooner touched the new coil and the connector broke off. Seriously, way to fragile. SO I took it back to warranty it out and they said they'd have to order one. It'd be here Friday. Damn. Another day of tuning gone. Friday rolls around, they didn't have it. They say they never cleared the count out after I bought the first one (warehouse showed 1 on hand). I pitch a little bit of a fit, nothing crazy (tears, snot, mascara, etc.) , and they ordered in a brand new one ($100 difference) clutch...that got here today (Saturday) at 2:00PM. Another day of tuning gone. Install was frustrating, but mainly because I was figuring everything out.
Getting the coil put on was fun. I tried throwing it in the oven at 200*F for 20 minutes, which helped a lot, but the coil still had about 3\16 of an inch left to go on. I tried to get the pulley on and it wouldn't go on far enough for the snap ring. To get the pulley on the rest of the way I ended up using the clutch installer took (which threads onto the compressor shaft) and a 2 inch (3\4" drive) socket I had to press it on the rest of the way. I probably could have just used the socket idea from the get go. After that, the pulley went right on along with the snap ring. Then the clutch...the clutch would get about .050" away from where it needed to be, and just stop dead. Happened 3 times. I looked up all kinds of how to's and they all said what I did, so I got angry, and decided to go out and try again. It worked fine and went right on. I still don't know what i did differently, lol.
After that it was easy peasey. retaining nut, belts, wheel, done. This car has never idled so quietly. Other than the IAC sounding like it's hawking a loogie when the engine is cold of course. I never knew how loud it idled until I fixed the problem lol. I was able to at least get a good MAF scan the other day, so I made those changes and flashed the car.
At this point I don't know if I even want to tune the MAF anymore, in a week or 2 I'll have a ported TB to put on, and I'll just have to start over again. Eh, I'll probably just want to go driving and end up tuning again tomorrow. What a way to spend 2 weeks off, right?
Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
Its like trying to be dealt 3 aces... money, time, and motivation, in the same hand. Odds are 2 out of 3 is as close as a guy gets. If you can afford something and have time to mess with it, you won't want to. If you want to do something, you won't be able to spare either the time or money. Otherwise, you're not being taxed heavily enough lol. The cars demand "tribute" one way or another. Sux it was the compressor, and glad if it didn't scarf a belt.
Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
At least you'll have more practice so you can help me. Good going I know you were getting frustrated. It's one of those things that's so easy it is difficult sometimes. I wonder if you had the key in a different orientation that allowed it to slide on.
Jeff
Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
I really didn't see any difference in the key, but I suppose it's possible. I hit everything with sand paper to clean it up, made double damned sure the key was seats all the way on the compressor shaft, and tried to press it on again. Worked like a charm. If it wasn't cold (enough to make my hands hurt every time I bumped into something), I hadn't been waiting 3 days to do this, had an actual garage to work in, etc. I wouldn't have been so frustrated with it. Now that I've done it I could do it again with a lot less frustration, that's for sure.

This warms my heart. <3
Re: 2000 GTP: I Can Jump Myself!
Hell it made my day to have my car even remotely compared to or put in the same "class" as yours, lol.
