Max must be super busy. He had told me he was going to post Wed night.

Short story made as long as I can:
Wed the 2nd I recieved a call that he thought something went bad in the valve train when taking some coworkers out to lunch. Erich then called with a dead motor at about 3pm. By 7pm two dead cars had been delievered. Both parked until Saturday.

Saturday: Max pulled the plugs to find one electrode beated closed. Erich arrived with a motor. While Max plugged away at hsi disassembly Erich and I pulled his and started swapping parts to the new motor. (heads, cam, oil pan, intake, everything except the shortblock.) By the end of the night Erichs was ready to go back in and Max's was ready to pull out and put on the recently emptied engine stand.

Sunday: Pulled Max's, slapped it on the stand and he pulled the other head off. Erich's was back to running and left.

Monday: I get out of work a couple hours before Max and jumped on it. By the time he arrived his old L36 was on the stand and stripped to the shortblock. He tossed in the cam, oil pickup and prepped all the block surfaces for reassembly.

Tuesday: I did a radiator hose on someones car, then hopped to it. Max arrived to find one head awaiting torque and me cleaning the other. He got those torqued down, soon as he did the first final pass I had the pushrods in and was torquing the rockers, intake went on, we were hauling some major butt........then realized we didn't have front and rear engine cover gaskets. Order placed...damnmmmmit!

Wed: Max arrived early and found the motor sitting in the cradle. To prove it, I disconnected the hoist. From then until 9-9:30 we installed the headers, intercooler core, SC, TB, hooked up the wiring, PS pump, AC compressor, starter, TC bolts name it.. at 9-9:30 he turned the key and it roared to life again. We high fived and called it a night after running it up to temp and topping off the fluids. It's ready for an oil change.

Thurs-Sun: Max is busy with good stuff and on Sun he'll be by to pick her up. Had Erich's not been there, it probably would have been a two day turn around and run on Sunday.

is there any data to back up the failure? Chipping pistons is EXTREMELY hard to do... it takes alot of things going wrong to get those sort of piston temperatures.

Well..the head came off and the piston was chipped. When you say data to back it up, no recording was being done at the time of the failure.

I thought pistons weren't all that hard chip depending on how much detonation you have. And I remember Max saying he had 0* KR? If he chipped one on his L32, wouldn't his L36 be more vulnerable under the same setup?

    Signs of a chipped piston.

    1. Car runs bad, you pull plugs and find one or more electrodes smashed.
    2. Pieces of piston on top of your IC core. They can come up through the bypass hole of the SC
    3. Visual confirmation

From research and chatting with others, apparently GM didn't gap the rings on the L26 and L32 as much as the predecessor engines. Therefore it's easier to chip a piston.

Max should be returning from a trip today. Likely we'll hear from him.
