It's okay Max. I'm here for you.
So what's the story with this car?
Max must be super busy. He had told me he was going to post Wed night.
Short story made as long as I can:
Wed the 2nd I recieved a call that he thought something went bad in the valve train when taking some coworkers out to lunch. Erich then called with a dead motor at about 3pm. By 7pm two dead cars had been delievered. Both parked until Saturday.
Saturday: Max pulled the plugs to find one electrode beated closed. Erich arrived with a motor. While Max plugged away at hsi disassembly Erich and I pulled his and started swapping parts to the new motor. (heads, cam, oil pan, intake, everything except the shortblock.) By the end of the night Erichs was ready to go back in and Max's was ready to pull out and put on the recently emptied engine stand.
Sunday: Pulled Max's, slapped it on the stand and he pulled the other head off. Erich's was back to running and left.
Monday: I get out of work a couple hours before Max and jumped on it. By the time he arrived his old L36 was on the stand and stripped to the shortblock. He tossed in the cam, oil pickup and prepped all the block surfaces for reassembly.
Tuesday: I did a radiator hose on someones car, then hopped to it. Max arrived to find one head awaiting torque and me cleaning the other. He got those torqued down, soon as he did the first final pass I had the pushrods in and was torquing the rockers, intake went on, we were hauling some major butt........then realized we didn't have front and rear engine cover gaskets. Order placed...damnmmmmit!
Wed: Max arrived early and found the motor sitting in the cradle. To prove it, I disconnected the hoist. From then until 9-9:30 we installed the headers, intercooler core, SC, TB, hooked up the wiring, PS pump, AC compressor, starter, TC bolts name it.. at 9-9:30 he turned the key and it roared to life again. We high fived and called it a night after running it up to temp and topping off the fluids. It's ready for an oil change.
Thurs-Sun: Max is busy with good stuff and on Sun he'll be by to pick her up. Had Erich's not been there, it probably would have been a two day turn around and run on Sunday.
maxed out the timing but didnt back anything off for safety, then had a car full of people.
its ok max, yours lasted longer than my is3 build the second time. blew it on the dyno within 24 hours of being completed...
That sucks. I'm still really looking forward to seeing this beast

Bill don't **** around people, he gets the **** done.
If anybody has ever met bill he has arms that could put Barry Bonds to shame LOL
Good stuff Bill. Hopefully it holds up this time. lol
is there any data to back up the failure? Chipping pistons is EXTREMELY hard to do... it takes alot of things going wrong to get those sort of piston temperatures.
Now that I have some time to post after being away for the past few days I noticed that Bill pretty much gave you all the update. I basically got my tune dialed in with myself in the car, running 11.7 AFR and 19-19.5 degrees of timing, zero knock. I then piled three other friends into the car and went WOT from 30-65 mph, just a quick pull. Compared to the day I was dialing in AFR and timing (about 45 degrees out) we had a cold spell come through and outside it was maybe 15 degrees outside. Between the change in temperature and added weight in the car, I assumed my AFR was a little leaner than 11.7 (probably more like 12.0-12.1) and with the 19.5 degrees of timing on 93, cylinder #3 got pissed and chipped the piston.
Now that I have put a little over 50 miles on the L36 bottom end (was the stock bottom end out of the car) and running a 3.5 pulley, I'm keeping things conservative on both boost and timing until I dial in the tune. So far the car runs great, trims are already spot on within -2 LTFT to 0 LTFT. Next is dial in AFR and this time I'll shoot for 11.4-11.5. Timing right now is about 14 degrees, may increase to 16 degrees (max).
I'm just glad I finally got the car back on the road and can enjoy it again. If any of you either have tuned top-swapped cars or are running a similar set-up, please chime in if you have any knowledge on what to tune differently, what to watch for, etc.
As Bill said, no data to back up the failure. I was watching my Aeroforces, saw maybe 1-3 degrees of knock. The refresh rate of the gauge may have prevented me from seeing 10+ degrees of KR for all i know at a given second. AFR on my wideband was high 11's, low 12's (leaner that day compared to when I was tuning the AFR/timing in 45 degree weather).
Well..the head came off and the piston was chipped. When you say data to back it up, no recording was being done at the time of the failure.
Man i'm sure mine are chipped. I just hope my car holds up until I can start my build.
I thought pistons weren't all that hard chip depending on how much detonation you have. And I remember Max saying he had 0* KR? If he chipped one on his L32, wouldn't his L36 be more vulnerable under the same setup?
