Check the transmission, something may have slipped I broke 3rd gear on my old manual transmission when I was trying to shift and hit a huge pothole at the same time. It was 2 AM and headlights from '82 Caviar doesn't do good in telling me there's a pothole big enough to swallow a beach ball whole. I spent the remaining 5 or 6 months I had with the car going from 2nd to 4th.
