Same exact procedure to get the side cover off. You don't need to worry about the wiring harness, valve body or channel plate. The soleniod is right behind the side cover.

    What are the codes?

I assume you checked the fluid level with the car running?

Which shift solenoid did you replace?

When you put it in gear does the engine speed dip a little like 100 - 200 RPM?

This would indicate that first gear is engaging but the TCC clutch is holding the tranny back.

Does the car shift into reverse?

Sounds like the TCC solenoid. That's what happened with one of my previous ones. They had to pull the tranny and clean it out. It actually ended up killing my TC.

you would have a 4T65E trans. i think any 98 to 02 trans will work for you. a few things changes after 03.

98 Buick Regal GS, F body brakes, Caddy STS wheels, tinted tails L36 bottom end, lightly ported heads, 1.95 roller rockers, headers, gen 5 N* 3.0 pulley, FSIC, 42 lb injectors, a BrandonHall rebuilt trans, DHP tuned and AEM water/Meth injection https://goo.gl/gpV5kW

Like mentioned above, it may not be the soleniod. It can be a valve, the soleniod, something wrong in the converter itself, or wiring to the soleniod.

It would be tough for us to suggest a route to fix it, a trans shop diagnosis is probably the best suggestion at this juncture.
