The service engine light came on yesterday. I have a 2001 Grand Prix. Some websites claim it could be an emissions problem, any suggestions?? Email is zimmett@hotmail.com

I would run by Auto Zone or your local parts store and have them scan your car. Then post back up with the code.

I went to Auto one today and got this reading P0442. Claimed it could be gas cap,EVAP (evaporative emissios system)small leak.
Also the evaporative emission system is monitored for abilityto hold vacuum.
    Probable cause
    Defective or loose gas cap.
EVAP canister or hose cracked not connected.
    Purge or vent solenoid defective.
    Vacuum leak at engine
Could any one tell me what might be the cause, thanks Steve Zimmett.

It's probably just a loose gas cap. I'd just retighten the cap down and unplug my battery for like 35 minutes and see if it reappears.
Its just a car.......with rust and dreams for the future!!!!

I had the same code a couple weeks ago. Guy at autozone said it could have been a gas cap which we checked and tightened the cap and I didnt have him clear the code just to see if it would go out on its own and surely enough a week later it was off and hasnt come on again since. Didnt affect the cars driveability or performance.

^^^usually it wont, it might just throw a ton of vacuum leak codes when all it is is a $10 gas cap

I guess not too much to worry about. If its the gas cap why even bother but perhaps I'll disconnect the battery cable and see if the code goes away. Any way thank for all the help, Steve Zimmett
