Just a quick question about replacing a power steering rack and pinion.

I have a 2004 GTP Comp G. Has a bad abs module, so none of the goodies work; abs, traction control, and possibly magnasteer?

Question is; Do I need a rack and pinion that uses magnasteer or can I buy a regular rack and pinion?

Secondly, what part would you guys recommend and where should I buy it? The cheaper the better.

    Thanks guys

i got a napa reman on sale on line. a good one is not cheap, cheap ones are like not so good.

and if you have magna steer you buy a magna steer rack.

why change the rack if you got a bad abs module? if the abs light is on the steering will get firmer.

It was more of a question of would it matter if I chose a non-magnasteer rack and pinion?
I am not changing the rack because of the bad abs module. I'm replacing it because it's actually dying. (hard to steer to the left, easy to the right)

Possibility unrelated issue? ABS module doesn't mess with the magnasteer unless it's activated or the module goes bad, or there's a bad wheel hub seeing the whole system off.

Bad wheel hub/ module is easy to diagnose, if the light doesn't come on until after the car starts moving, bad hub. If it comes on before the car starts moving, bad module.

And if you put a non-magnasteer rack in a magnasteer car, it won't like you at all. Lots of weird stuff happens. Lol

buy the right rack, some say the lines wont fit right if you get a non m/s rack.

Am I misunderstanding/misremembering or doesn't the Magnasteer not work right if the ABS light is on?

if you have magna steer and the abs light on the steering gets firmer.

but not hard as hell to the left and easy to the right, thats a classic dying rack.

Yes, if the module goes bad or a hub is bad, the abs is either constantly trying to engage, or it's unable to engage in the first place, either way the magnasteer is designed to compensate for both traction control and abs when they are in use.

Was my thought exactly. Since it's already not working right with the malfunctioning abs module, I thought I might be able to get away with a non- magna steer R&P

Nope. Comp G abs modules are 400-500 dollars. I replaced it once before and 2 years later, it also dies. So I'm trying not to dump a ton of money into this car.

And I bet the ABS module is fine. I bet its a hub or ABS wire gone bad causing the ABS light.

^^^the first 6 inches of the harness on the control arm or the connectors are always good suspects.

Thanks for the update ! You never know who it is gonna help down the line, but it's a cool thing to do. Too many threads dead-end because people got what they needed and then....ghost....
