The 2.93 chain set is supposed to be stronger
Ok. So now I'm confused. I looked up the VIN. There is no transmission designation according to what I saw, just engine. According to the VIN I have a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP (WR in the 4th and 5th place in the VIN) with a 2.2 liter (4 in the 8th place in the VIN) 4 banger made in Oshawa Ontario.
No sunroof.
Pretty sure the option sheet says it has a heavy duty transmission. Is there a fool proof way to check without squeezing my fat a$$ under the car?
This car was special ordered by the dealer for dealer stock, not for a specific customer.
Your RPO codes should tell you what motor, trans, suspension package etc etc etc, the VIN will mainly be for year and where it was made.
There are no tags on the tranmission to tell what gear ratio it has but the HD transmission have a different diff cover than the non hd transmission. I can't find the picture of the difference at the moment but you can look up both transmissions on the web and see the difference. (the diff cover in where the passenger side axle goes in).
Also if you have paddle shifter buttons on behind the steering wheel, it's a Comp-G with 3.29's. Highway revs at 70mph is roughly 2200 aswell compared to the 2.93's that are 1800-1900ish.
your thinking this is a numbers matching car???? that just dont exists no more, thats a 70's and later deal.
back in the day you could break down a vin, but thats long over. its who cares ville for these cars really.
What does a stock boost gauge look like in your car? I haven't seen one on any 04+ cars. With a 3.8" pulley on a stock car they will make right at 10psi.
Jeff
there are trans tags on the 4t65s its on the back in just a little farther than the diff cover. in the vehicle its facing the rack and pinion.
you can decipher the stampings on the trans with this
http://www.gmtuners.com/pda/4T65E-ID.htm
that shows what vehicle it came out of the tq convertor size and trans id code.
if you need to find a compatible trans for a certain vehicle.
edit btw the hd diff does not effect over all gear ratio. you could use an hd diff on any trans so long as you use the correct hd cover.
the above info is wrong........
here is how to break down a trans id code.... lol they do indeed exist....

It's in the DIC. Just a bar that extends from left to right the higher the boost goes. No numbers on it. Kind of useless if you ask me. Along with all the other gauges. You don't see speedo's that don't have numbers on them. Why doesn't the temp gauge have numbers?
Hmmm? Do they still put build sheet in the bottom of the drivers seat? I wonder. All I have is the window sticker showing standard and optional equip. No codes on them.
Standard:
Supercharged 3800 v6, 260 hp
4-spd hd auto transmission
Magnasteer I var pwr steering
Ride and handling suspension (wtf???)
Options:
GT performance package
-Stabilitrak sport
-Tapshift
-Head-up display
-Magnasteer II power steering
It has TapShift and at 110 km/h (68 mph for those that don't speak Canuckanese) the rpm is just thin blonde one under 2000.
I'm probably going to have to find a time when the local GM parts guy isn't so busy and quiz them a bunch. This sounds like a parts ordering nightmare in the works.
Check the rpo codes underneath the deck lid (trunk)

I guess you have the 5 button DIC then, my 05' GTP has a 3 button so I installed a boost gauge to see what was going on. When you said your 8th digit is 4 that is the 3.8L SC engine I'm not sure where you got that info on a 4 cylinder it was never even an option on these cars (04+). The RPO codes are under the carpet in the trunk. As far as the temp gauge goes it's standard 100-260F (38-127C) gauge it just isn't marked. Typically the temp will run between the 1/4 mark and the center with it going a needles width over the center about the time the fans turn on (217F,103C) low speed.

Thanks. I'd be willing to bet that the sheet with the codes is sitting safe and sound directly under my subs. That's just the way things work for me. Did you ever notice that you always find what you're looking for in the last place that you look? Weird how that works.
Story of my life lol

They haven't put build sheets under the seats in forever. I bet in over 20-25 years now lol.
Everything in the 90's went to RPO codes that were on one giant sticker.
