you should have used something more fun than a push button. like the switches they use to start nascar cars:

i hope to do something more fun and flashy like that when i gut the crap out of the interior.

I've thought about all this before. I see it being possible to make it work how newer cars work, but being a lot of work. Requiring chips and sensors for a key/keyfob, locking out grinding the starter, and also making the button turn the car off, or into strictly auxiliary. Making it even more difficult for myself would be how it would interact with my remote start. Would pressing the button turn the car off, do nothing, or work as intended? And if it doesn't work, how would one make it work?

    So many possibilities.

And **** if you go through all that trouble you may as well give the car range-sensitive door locks. If you get close, unlocked, if you get far enough away, locked... again, like a new car.

Actually I got the idea from my remote start when I installed it, and the way I'm designing it is to actually emulate a remote start system (it's being designed with remote start in mind). The system will have an input detecting if the car is running, and if so it will cut power to the ignition line and send a pulse to the brake pedal sense line which will shut off any remote start system (provided the system is properly installed).

Also, I suppose I can program in some unlock code for when you approach the car since there will be a few extra relays open. Of course this will be a configurable option if I do decide to include it because I'm not a fan of the auto lock/unlock. Actually, theoretically speaking I could make an entire remote start / alarm system to go with this too, but that would be a little much imo.

In for auto unlock lock. I have no key holds and the oem.keyfobs need to be aimed at the middle of the dash to work

I like the idea of a switch. Is there anyway that you could get a switch that has an on and off position but make it have to be pushed past the on to crank the starter like the key? I'm not the most electrically inclined but i can follow a chart and solder if someone else could write it up. Im thinking I dont need the key in the ignition cuz i live in a small town and aint really worried about theft if someone has gotten that far? I really like the idea and if its not possible with the switch i would like to just put a button start in

Only way you could wire without the key is if you didn't have the chipped keyes. My 97 doesn't but my 00 did

Look for "pk3" on the top of your key... Actually you'll see the chip towards the top

It looks like its just metal with a little rubbber deal on top. i also have a valet key without the rubber piece that will start the car and open the doors but no the trunk or the backseat pass through

99pgpgt Unless you have some weird late model or special model that is better than my 99 GTP, you should know that the 99s don't have "chipped keys" the PK3 setup wasn't implemented in our GP until 2000.
If your car isn't engraved with PK3 at the base of the key it is like all other 97-99s and doesn't have any sensing capabilities. Also, there is something wrong with your "valet" key if it won't open the trunk, mine opens everything.

I actually prefer it that way, if someone wants to steal it, they will steal it regardless of the "security" system our cars have. Heck they steal new laser cut programmed Mercedes cars all the time, you think they can't bypass resistors in our old cars??? haha

I really considered wiring up a push button and modding the lock cylinder so it only hits the ACC - OFF - ON points and you HAVE to push the button to start it. But I want my button hidden, like where the AC Power is the over head console. The drop down cover would keep it hidden if you didn't know it was there, and how many people would look for it up there???

after looking at the dimensions its like 3 1/2 by 2 1/2 and i measure the cubby hole and its 3 by 2. do you think there would still be enough room for the switch if the plate was behind the trim 1/4 of a inch all around?

so i ordered a button finally and im wondering what it would take to make my key only hit the acc-off-on and then i was thinking of putting it in the glove box by the trunk switch or in place of the cigarette lighter by the ash tray

    also what gauge wire?

That would take some modification to the lock cylinder, not sure how to go about it.

Button placement, hidden is nice but consider how often you get in and out and how many times you want to open the glove box just to start the car, or open the ash tray to hit the button. That is why I said I wanted it in the over head console power outlet area... hidden but the cover holds itself up so you can leave it open or close to conceal.
