So the other day drove my car to a restaurant and when we came out to leave i couldn't get it out of park... the shifter button on the knob wouldn't push in. Since i had heard about this problem before with gps i just used the shift lock release button the next couple times i had to drive it. My key hasnt gotten stuck like i have seen on here as an associated problem.

Checked my BTSI fuse......Checked to make sure i had brake lights....both were fine.

So i did what any broke ass college kid would do and took the center counsole apart and rubber banded the shift lock release lever all the way open so i don't have to push the button every time.

The only problem is now my shifter could potentially be bumped into reverse or park going highway speed because i basically took away that safety feature!

Any ideas what could be wrong and how to fix it for real with something other than a rubber band?

Did you check at the soleniod for power! How about listening for a clicking from it!

Nab a picture of it! I've seen on my own car where teh white piece that would be pushed from above to release it can jamb up!
I drink..so consider that when reading my posts.

Havent checked for a clicking. I do know that the while plastic piece doesn't move when i push down the brake. It moves easily with the shift lock release which i have rubber banded engaged

You still have to squeeze the release to shift it into Reverse or park. At least that's how mine is and I've had it rigged for 2 years now.

So as long as you can control the urge to throw it into reverse or park u should be good

im pretty sure i don't need to push the button and can just push it forward when driving. I put the parking brake on while in drive and could just push it on forward into reverse then park with no button....

    scary!

my release button, that you would use to bypass the shifter button if the button failed dont do nothing, i have to slam my hand on the shifter knob to get out of park.

but once its in drive i have to push the shifter button to get to reverse or park.

its only frozen when in park, after i slam it and go into gear it works.

are you saying that you have the shifter button rigged to stay down all the time? now that would be scary i must say.

Ya it was real simple to do. I took out the center counsol and simply looked what the shift lock release button was doing. it pulls out the white plastic disc on the cable allowing you to push the knob button and shift like nothing was wrong.

It is kinda scary. Car off, Keys out, I can put it in any gear even without using the brake.

This is the whole reason i posted this to see if im a complete idiot for disabling this safety feature... no doubt it isn't strickly legal

ok then lol im going to pull mine apart and try to fix it the right way, i may have a wire pulled off or something easy, i've had the console off so many time i may have pulled something out of place and it worked it way off over time or something, thanks.

    Regals do rule!

I pulled the white piece off ...or well..it fell off. Meanwhile my shifter works totally normal w/o it.

C'mon man..it's at least 50 out... rainy and sucky..but all you gotta do is smile at the neighbors when you get outta the foggy window car. They'll wonder what you were doing in there.

My neighbors don't even bat an eye at that stuff anymore. They just accept whatever they see as "normal" for me.
