Can you swap the basic DIC on a 97 grand Prix gt for the one that gives gas mileage etc? that's on the 98? If yes how easy is it to do?

Sounds like your car is stuck with the dic it was born with.
Since no one else helped...... Please read here....http://www.grandprixforums.net/addin...3-gp-8171.html I've done this personally on my 97. Its worked great with no flaws. Just make sure you get the DIC from a 97 GP only.

Quick question since I already have a hud I am guessing not as much splicing correct?
ops one more question if I have a choice between digital and analog is one easier to swap with what I have now?
ok so you do have a HUD display on your car that shows your speed etc on your windshield???? If you do , you should already have the DDIC (digital driver info center) but it seems the one you have is the analog which doesn't show anything except warning lights. Is this right?
That's correct shows when a door is open the the light for tire pressure and trac and oil change
My 97 didn't have the HUD on the windshield so there wasn't a plug for me to just plug my dic into. I had to wire it up because my car started its life out as a SE ..... its now a GT. Since your 97 is a GT it may already have the plug inside the dash wrapped up with the other wire harness ,but just in case it doesn't make sure when you purchase the 97 DIC you get it with the harness/pig tail.... I now own a fully loaded 01 GTP so I didn't have to worry about adding stuff to it :P
Thanks so much I really appreciate this especially the pics of what to get I sent a few of these in the junk yards by me and my next trip out there I plan on grabbing one. I got hit by a deer so this started a slow but steady rebuild and some add ons. I just needed a hood and fender, but decided to get the gtx hood and from there is just snowballed redoing everything you know how it goes I am sure
As far as I know they all had the trac button, in later GP's they had the TCS button. they both do the same thing as disabling the trac control.
I just found this one with out the trac button on ebay...http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/97-Po...item3f0ba9f51b , I've actually never seen a GP with this style DIC in it.....
