So I noticed a high pitch whining noise coming from the engine the other day...

it goes away when I touch the gas, comes and goes at idle with the car parked, but really noticeable when coasting at like 40 with the windows down

what are some things that could cause this? My ac compressor clutch makes a pretty bad grinding noise from time to time and it sounds like it could be coming from that area, so that's where I'm probably going to start. last I checked that was the only pulley that had made any noise or had weird resistance when turning it by hand.

I haven't investigated further yet and at this point I'm thinking its a pulley, but I figured I'd ask and see if there are any other obvious things I should be thinking about

nope, replaced it like 3 months ago so I'd hope not, sounds nothing like power steering whine either, much higher pitched

Maybe the alternator? Mine makes a high pitched whine when it's cold out for some reason.
