Last year I broke mine putting back my trans. My airbag light is always on and I don't have any steering wheel controls.
Has anyone changed one before? If so please post up how. Pics would be a bonus

its easy bud
the piggest pita is feeding through the column lead wire down to the connector panel
new ones usually have a retainer but a ziptie, (not tight, lightly snug) through the donut hole will keep it from turning while you have it mostly in place on the colum shaft while feeding the wire through that tiny ass path with yer pecker.
just kiddin yer peckers no where near long enough to feed it 3" much less a foot...so ya better cut the old harness off the clockspring and use it as the snake to pull it down.
lol youll have no problem, if i recal the biggest annoyance is the multifunction switch and that damn lego block electrical connector for the column "module"
take the plastic off and the metal knee shield off under the column, the clock spring harness runs with the ignision harness. its shares the same pulg under the dash.
steering wheel and air bag need to gome off and a pair of snap ring pliers too.
if your putting in a used one, if you can take the used one off wheel straight, your good to go. if you have no idea if the wheels are straight, you need to re senter the middle part. turn it all the way to one side, then turn to the other counting the turns, then turn back 1/2 that count to center it.
thx guys
I have replaced one on a GM column before but not a Grand Prix. The clockspring should have two connectors, the two wire for the airbag and the four wire for the steering wheel controls. I used a coat hanger and taped connectors that go to the bottom of the column to the end of the hanger, then carefully snaked it down the column.
Like it was said above, it is important to center the clockspring before you install it or it could snap when you turn the wheel all the way to one side. If you break the C clip that holds the clockspring to the column, the dealer probably has one, I got one for about $2 a couple of years ago. Harbor Freight or Lowes also carry standard sizes.
There are a few used ones on ebay right now for $25-40. You could also replace the whole column if you prefer, or if you wanted to swap to the newer 2001+ style steering wheel.
I already have a new clock spring.
I assume the clock spring sits behind airbag?
My question is would I be able to just get a complete steering wheel with the clock spring already in and just have to send wires down column?
I wouldn't mind a newer style steering wheel or even a replacement. Mine is ripping.
the clock spring sits underneath the steering wheel you're going to have to remove the air bag then the steering wheel.... then you'll be able to get to the snap rings and remove the clock spring.
Ahhh ok. I understand now.
Kinda a pain in the ass. Lol.
Broke the clock spring last year when I was putting the trans back in car.
from now on when doing anything involving a loose wheel, string your seatbelt through the wheel and buckle it in, youll still have slack to align the steering shaft splines, but the wheel wont be able to rotate and **** the clockspring
