Just another comment from the gallery, but mine does this relatively often. Sometimes if I'm slowing down to a sharp left with a quarter tank showing, it will drop below E. It would stay there for up to 20 min or more. When I started the car again it would go back to normal.
The fuel gauge can move freely if the car is in park or neutral.
I flipped a new dorman level sensor into my crapbox this Sat. 15min and $20 later, I'm praying the pump doesn't find out I put new parts on the car. lol In all the cars that I've done senders etc..I rarely use a new gasket. New gasket needs a lot of lube typically to get it to seat and sometimes a bit of beating.
"Beating?" Don't you mean "Professional Adjustment?" :)
BTW, is that Dorman fuel sending unit on eBay for the 1998 model year? Checking the GM equivalent numbers on another site leads me to believe it might be for the later models. (Although I don't know how accurate the other site is either.) Compatibility chart on the eBay page says no go for 98s as well.
Amazon Prime.. $20 to my door..
Professionals don't lie about beatings. Sometimes ...you gotta beat these things down.
Re-entered my specs in the eBay page again, and it insists, "This part is not compatible with 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GT Coupe 2-Door 3.8L 3800CC 231Cu. In. V6 GAS OHV Naturally Aspirated." The OEM part numbers the Dorman unit replaces are: 89060197, 89060199, & 89060200. From checking other Web sites, it seems those GM part numbers apply only to later model W-bodies.
Rockauto.com has a replacement ACDelco part fuel level sensor #SK1195 for the 1998 GT that comes up at $109.79. Replaces Alternate/OEM Part Number(s): 19121316, 25323814, SK1028. I like the idea of paying $20 instead of $110. Please convince me the cheaper Dorman part is the right one. :)
Go to rockauto, punch in your info, search for "fuel level sensor" or whatever, and it should show the dorman unit.
Not sure I want to put $110 into this fix. It doesn't act $110 worth of weird. :)
Thats so weird, I would have thought they were all the same.
I ran across this on eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-HERKO-FU...23dd98&vxp=mtr
Never heard of "Herko." Anyone familiar with them? They don't seem to be a manufacturer, just a distributor. The actual parts might be Chinese knock-offs; then again, they might be OK. I have no idea. $14 is a good price, but if I put it in and it fails in a week, that's not exactly a good deal. Any thoughts? BTW, Amazon is selling the same ACDelco unit Rock Auto sells for $93.
http://www.amazon.com/ACDelco-SK1195.../dp/B0016HPQ7S
I think I'd lean toward the ACDelco unit... but $14 is a great price if it works.
It's a super easy fix.. I'd give it the $14 try. What is $14 these days, a vomit meal from McDonalds?
Good point. The $14 part seems to have some good warranty coverage, so it looks like it's worth a shot. If I have to replace it later, at least I'll be able to do it faster the second time around. :)
