I always fill the filter with oil and let it set. Then fill it again before I put it on. It is probably 3/4 full of oil before I put it on.
Oil gets dirty. Yes, you have a filter, but it will not filter 100% of the dirt in your oil. Filters are good only down to a certain particle size (usually in microns). So the rest of the dirt stays in the oil. Ever wonder why your oil gets dark the longer you run it? Contaminants.
As for changing your oil every 5-6k miles, that may be fine on a brand new vehicle, but my car has a lot of miles on it. The more miles a car gets, the more the engine will wear per mile. So with me changing my oil at 3k miles is about the same amount of dirt and wear as a new engine at 6k miles. Now, I don't know these numbers for a fact. But an old engine wears more than a new one. So you need to change your oil more often.
As for filling the filter with oil before I start the car. Yes, it does run through the unfiltered part. But that is brand new oil. Shouldn't be much if any dirt in the oil. And on startup, the filter is bypassed until sufficient oil pressure is reached anyway.
I also inspect every filter before I use it. Never found any metal of any kind in the threads like suggested.
And I have about 15 filters on my shelf.![]()
