    Hey guys,

on my 08 Grand Prix I have an issue with the airbag system. To start out the light is on. One thing I notice though is when I bought the car if someone sat in the passenger seat the light on the dash would go to "on" and would chime unless the seatbelt was buckled. It no longer does that. It had that problem for a few months & eventually the airbag light came on & stayed on. When I got the car it was intermittent but now the light is solid.

What should I check on the car? I know I should prolly take it to the shop to get checked out but I'm on a very tight budget & can't afford to do so.

Maybe check under the pass. seat for any loose/broken wires. Some cars have a weight sensor in the pass. seat that arms the airbag when someone is sitting there. Might also want to check all your fuses.

your radio controls on the steering wheel still work? if not the clock spring went bad.

under the pass seat/ under the carpet is the airbag module. it also can go bad, or loose its ground as its bolted to the floor.

you need to take the seat out, and then lift the rug up some to get to it.

any yellow plugs you find are airbag related, unplug them, work them off and on a few times. sometimes its just a dirty plug.

then there's always the good old pay to have it scanned.

I completely forgot to reply to this post... Light is still on cuz I hadn't been able to work on it but any idea how much it costs to get it scanned?

Yup they do. Horn works, everything else related to the steering wheel works. Once I get my taxes back I'll have to get the car scanned to see if my suspicions are correct. if it's the box under the passenger seat I'll disconnect the battery, remove the airbag fuses, and see if cleaning the contacts will help, as well as inspect the wiring. I think it's tied into the passenger seat cuz it hasn't detected someone sitting in the seat for some time now. If I sit in the seat the passenger air bag light stays on "off" and never switches

check the air bag plugs under the pass seat, anything yellow is air bag related. take it off and back on a few times to clean it.

the module under the seat, if your cowl has ever leaked and the floor got soaking wet a number of times, it could be bad, that leaking water can make it to the back seat foot area, so water can get to it.

no need to pull fuses if you unhook the battery neg cable. and as far as the seat plugs, id just do that car off keys out. i only fear the air bag its self when plugging it back in.

Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a go once it warms up and the car is back from the body shop. It bugs the crap outta me that the airbag light is on, even more that I've been putting it off. Time for me to get my butt in gear and fix it.

    Adding to whats been said...
bounce up and down in the passenger seat then key on to see if light is off. That would indicate a problem with the sensing grid under the seatcover or it's wiring.
Don't forget the inboard end of the seatbelt, see that the slot is free of debris and buckle/unbuckle several times briskly to dislodge any stuck on dust, etc.
