I think I have a bad switch in the steering wheel but I need to check before I pay someone to take the wheel apart (I don't want to mess around next to air bags). The cruise sometimes set when I press it (shows on DIC), sometimes it sets then cancels right away like I pressed down and pulled toward cancel. Other times it just won't do anything. Resume has never worked for me.

Since it sometimes worked, I'm pretty sure the problem is at the steering wheel switch. What can I do to find out for sure? And is there a source of new switch, like at AutoZone or such?

Sounds like it might be a brake switch issue. Has anything ever been done with the brake pedal position sensor? I'd start there.

Nothing had been done to the brakes since I got the car. The switch is under the dash along the brake pedal arm right? Or is there another switch? I can check when it's light outside (3:15 AM here now) with my multimeter. Is it a simple on/off switch or a variable resistor like?

I think it's variable, according to this site:

Seems different than the typical on\off switch that 97-03 and most cruise control setups have.
